We need some information from you, in order to assist you. What is the Camcorders Brand name, model number, part number, etc., etc. Also, what type of connection does it have, i.e USB, or Firewire?

Re: no driver for camcorder

It's a panasonic PV-GS83 with a firewire connection. I have WINDOWS XP media edition 2002. I have looked in various different sites on the internet, and have never found a driver listed to support this camera. As far as part number goes, i can't find any numbers for that.

Are you aware that there is a USB connection on this device? If not then this is an alternate means of downloading the data to the PC.

As stated the the Manual (PDF) all you need is a OHIC (Open Host Controller Interface Specification) compliant Firewire connections. Plese check your Device manager and see if you have the Firewire drivers installed.

If you do not have a User Manual (things get lost)? Then here's a link to the PDF formatted manual:

http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPER.../PVGS83-MU.PDF File Size = 4.0 MB

If, on the other hand you need Firewire drivers? The tell me the make and model of you computer and I'll locate the appropriate Firewire driver for it, hopefully.

Re: no driver for camcorder

I do have the firewire drivers installed. I also have the manual. The problem i am having, is when i connect my camera to the computer, i go into the device manager, and my camera shows up under "other devices" and has an exclamation mark over it. when i click on it, the dialog box says "the drivers for this device are not installed. (code 28)"

Here is what it says in the User Guide, concerning the Digital Video hook up:

**** Begin Quote ****

PC Connection with the DV Interface Cable

A video clip can be transferred directly to your PC
(personal computer) via a DV Interface Cable
(optional) using products and software from a
number of video editing software companies.
Using products from video editing software
companies allows you to capture and edit video
clips using the DV Interface.

Panasonic DVC are OHCI compliant and
should have no problem working with any
OHCI compliant FireWire Card/Video —
Editing software package.

* Personal computer must be equipped with a DV
Terminal.
* During Camcorder playback, do not disconnect
the DV Interface Cable or turn the Camcorder
off as this may cause a PC hang-up error.
* IEEE1394 Interface must conform to OHCI
(Open Host Controller Interface Specification).

**** End Quote ****

The above is a direct quote from the User Manual. No where does it say anything about a driver. I've searched all eleven Panasonic sites for anything referring to your device. Nothing I have found on those sites suggest, in any way that there is a driver or a need for one.

At this point I'd guess that your 3rd party Software has some how gotten corrupted and can not detect the Camcorder any longer. It might need re-installing?

The USB interface has it's limitations, if I read the manual correctly. It can do things the DV Interface can't, but it's much more limited in a lot of ways.

HTH

Re: no driver for camcorder

from what i understand in the manual, The usb port is just for transferring the stills off the sd card. I have reinstalled the drivers for the 1394 port as well. could it be a problem with the port in the camera.

Re: no driver for camcorder

also, I looked at the windows hardware compatability list (hcl) and can't find any panasonic cameras or camcorders on this list, does this mean windows won't recognise the camera for some reason?

No that is not any indication at all. If they included every device that was Firewire compliant? The size of the HWCL would be measured in Gigabytes.

The only suggestion I can make at this point is to try it on another machine equipped with a Firewire port. If it doesn't work? Then I'd replace the DV Cable and see if that helps any. OR, if you have another Firewire device, of some type? Plug it into your Firewire port and see if it is recognized properly?
