Apparently i own a DVD-Burner that does not exist.

Joke title, but let me explain.

I bought a DVD Burner. I just checked my TigerDirect History and this is what it said i bought:
L12-1132 OEM
Lite-ON 20X DVDRW SATA LH-20A1S-12 Int No SW OEM

Copy pasted right from the website.

Lite-ON LH-20A1S-12.

This is what i bought. The images look exactly the same as to what is in my tower right now. The description is accurate.

I can't burn DVD's, I can't play games, watch DVD's, or anything. The only thing i can do, oddly, is burn music or data CD'S. It's the only function that works. I try burning a DVD using either Nero, Ashampoo or DVD Flick and it either tells me one of 2 things:

1) No DVD Burner installed
2) Update your DVD Burner Firmware/Driver

So i go to the Lite-On Site and find the drivers for LH-20A1S

I download them, and run the installer.

An error message pops up

"NO DEVICE MATCHING THIS DRIVER FOUND, THIS DRIVER ONLY FOR LH-20A1S

YOU HAVE:

4-0-0-0 H:LC2982P GVT594I 1.0"

In my System Summary i go to my CD Drive area and it says this is what i own:

H:LC2982P GVT594I

I run VersionTracker pro and it can't even find that i have a DVD Burner installed. Nothing shows up for it.

This burner did NOT come with a drivers cd, all it came with was the Burner, a SATA cable, and a Nero 7 Essentials disc (Which doesnt have drivers on it, i checked)

On to google!

"4-0-0-0 H:LC2982P GVT594I" -- No Results

H:LC2982P --- No Results

GVT5941 ---- No results

LC2982P ---- No Results

So, According to Tigerdirect i ordered the "Lite-On LH-20A1S"

But according to my computer i own something which evidently does not actually exist, or i own the only one in existance, the "4-0-0-0 H:LC2982P GVT594I"

Key Points:

I am running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 and i am fully updated via Windows Update.

VersionTrackerPro could not find even my dvd burner as existing.

Google found nothing on what SystemSummary says i have.

The drivers for the DVD Burner i attempted to buy would not work on what ever device i have in my PC.

It is past the 30-day return on TigerDirect, returning isnt an option.

What the hell can i do?

Re: Apparently i own a DVD-Burner that does not exist.

check your m/b supports sata optical drives
check if they have to be connected to a certain sata port
check if you have to load a driver from the m/b setup disk so it will be seen
do you have other sata drives that are operating ok
try different sata ports

Re: Apparently i own a DVD-Burner that does not exist.

I don't know if this will be of any help or not, but here is the download page @ Lite-On.
http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?...pper&Itemid=75

As for the LC2982P GVT594I, the only reference to it I could find using Google was for a SCSI device, which I can't find at Lite-On's site.

This is my Mobo

http://www.computergate.com/products...rodcd=B8MK9MMV

It has 2 SATA ports on it.

I have a SATA dvd burner, this one..which isnt working.

and a SATA hard drive. Which works fine no issues.

I have tried switching the cables as you said, no difference.

I have installed every driver from the included "utilities and drivers" disc that came with my mobo.

Re: Apparently i own a DVD-Burner that does not exist.

Breakdown of what the XFlash Utility is telling you:

4-0-0-0 H:LC2982P GVT594I 1.0

4-0-0-0 = 4th Channel on your motherboard, i.e. IDE0, IDE1, SATA0, SATA1, etc.

H: = Current assigned drive letter

LC2982P GVT594I 1.0 = SCSI driver ID, i.e. virtual ID provided by the ASPI files used for making your device a "Virtual SCSI" device. This is normal and as it should be.

There is nothing mis-identified. In simple words their is nothing wrong with this, in fact it is correct! Keep in mind that this is a "Virtual Drive"! You should note the drive letter. Virtual drives begin at the letter "H:", this is a system default drive letter assignment. So this drive does NOT really exist. BUT, it is used by your burning software to write data to disc. That's why you can burn music, watch DVD's, play games, etc. All of this is done through the "Virtual Device".

HOWEVER, to burn "data" the burning software must be able to control the hardware, DIRECTLY! This can NOT be done through the virtual device. There fore there MUST be any entry in your device table for the LH-20A1S-12 drive. Apparently you don't have such an entry or you would not be here!?!

That's because the XFlash Utility only found the virtual SCSI device. Something is blocking your system from "seeing" the real drive. Since any recommendation I would make would be outside my experience level here, I will not make one. But what I will recommend is that you look into the discussion of "filters" on these forums. As this appears to be a clear case of such behavior. Why? Because the "virtual" part is installed and working correctly.

Someone here can provide you with assistance in the matter of filters.

Hope this explains somethings and helps you correct this problem.
