CD/DVD drivers

Can someone please let me know how I can tell if my PC has an internal DVD writer. The devise manager on the system control panel indicates there is a DVD/CD-ROM Drive. However, when I insert a DVD-RW, the PC does not recognise this and specifically requests a CD-R or CD-RW. How can I confirm one way or the other is I am able to copy files onto a DVD-RW or DVD-R?

Re: CD/DVD drivers

you'd need to add a DVD writer software package .. XP to my knowledge DOES NOT support writing to DVD's .. so you'd have to grab a free software package if any are available or install NERO / ROXIO software.
If you bought the PC with the drive installed check to see whether they gave you a NERO CD for installation or have already installed NERO or ROXIO .. most drives used to come with NERO for single drive use

there is a possibility that the drive has DVD-RW on it .. which doesn't mean that it can write DVD's just that it is able to read rewritable DVD's ..if however you put a blank unwritten CD in the drive you will be able to send files to be written to the CD writer which might be a god indicator that the drive is a writer. The next step though would be getting hold of software to try to write a DVD.

Try checking out the make & model of your drive from the hardware manager in the control panel / system . then do a search for your details on the web using google or yahoo.
Someone will have a page somewhere with the characteristics of the drive which will help you too.
