Updating Nvidia Drivers Causes Graphics Problems

Greetings all, firstly anyone who helps with with this problem has an immediate ticket to a long and fulfilling life of happiness, love and joy as well as my eternal gratitude . I first had this problem, a while ago about a month after the game Titan Quest came out which I bought, the game had serious problems with it's graphics if you did not have your Nvidia driver updated. So I did, but updating the drivers caused the game to have strange graphical problems in the start-up menu and the game itself. So frustrated and disappointed at not being able to play the game (as well as the money I wasted) I downgraded my driver back to the old one which was 44.03 the driver that came with my card. Recently when I bought the new Orange Box by valve, once again I found games that needed the newer driver than 44.03 to run properly, these games being Portal and Team Fortress 2. I hasten to add that I do have the minimum specifications for these game and both half life 2 and episode 1 work on reasonably high graphics settings but once again when I updated my driver to the latest one I got the horrible graphics problems again.

How it works exactly is this, the games start fine for the briefest of moments and then it pauses for a second or two and the graphics problems appear. In cases like team fortress 2, once the game starts with the problem, it pauses periodically to add even more funny squares, making it less and less playable. The thing is, once I install the new drivers these "corruptions" don't only effect the games that needed the drivers but all the games I play, even the ones that worked fine with the old drivers. Here are a few pictures of the problem:

Here you can see the issues on Warcraft 3 this is just one of the examples of a game that works with the old drivers, but experiences issues when new drivers are installed.

This is the same problem on Team Fortress 2, note that this game needs the new driver to work, but still experiences the same global problem i seem to have with the new drivers.

I really would like to be able to play my new games, both Titan Quest and Team Fortress 2 so I need to get this driver problem fixed. I know my pc is old and graphics card especially but I simply can't afford a new pc at this time, and I can't see my budget changing in the foreseeable future, also I meet the requirements for both these games, and for Team Fortress 2 in particular I have a friend who runs it fine with the same card.
Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've put the relevant information from a dxdiag at the bottom of the page but if you require any more information from me please just ask and tell me how I can get it. I'm not really a technical expert at all. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Updating Nvidia Drivers Causes Graphics Problems

Hi, welcome to TSF.

Have you tried the 84.21 driver version from nVidia?

If not - uninstall your current driver > restart Windows in VGA mode > disable antivirus > install the 84.21 driver > reboot.

Re: Updating Nvidia Drivers Causes Graphics Problems

No luck same problem. Other drivers that I have tried are: 66.93, 78.01, 91.47 and 163.74. Note that 56.72 works but it's still to old to run Team Fortress 2. Anyone else have any ideas?

Tap F8 when the computer is booting to bring up a screen where you can choose different modes to start Windows.
