PCI Device
Here is all the background information I have. I hope someone can help me. I left my computer on and connected to the net when i went to work. When i got back home, after a thunderstorm had blown through, my computer was frozen on the screen saver. I turned off and on my computer and it booted up to the desktop with no problems. THen the new hardward wizard pops up and says there is new ghardware found. PCI Device. It asks to search and install the drivers. I click the recommended option but the the drivers are not found or not installed. SO i click on my internet provider and it tells me that the modem is not correctly hooked up. I check the device manager and i dont have modems listed but under other devices that is a yellow question mark with PCI device. I went to the gateway site and with my serial number of my computer i found the drivers to my modem. I downloaded them and unzipped them, but when I click on the setup icon in the folder, the drivers always fails to install. I have downloaded them more than once and overwrote the folder as well, but it still fails. I restart the computer and the modem is not there and the new hardware wizard continue to pop up with PCi Device. What is wrong, please help. thank you.

Re: PCI Device
It could be that the modem has been damaged. Is there any way you can either try a different modem, or try your modem in another computer? Modems tend to fry very easily.

Re: PCI Device
No i have no way of do either of those two things. Last night, I tried several different things. First, i did a msconfig and unchecked everything in the startup tab and re started my computer in safe mode. I clicked on the setup icon in the cab file and clicked ok for installation but it always fails. Then I tried going to the device manager, other devices,PCI device right click it and selected install drivers, and i choose advance and then do not to search. With the list of device, i choose modem and clicked ok. then had disck and browsed to the cab folder with the extracted files from the gateway website. and tried to select the file with .inf (extension) and clicked ok, but the location was only the folder and not the exact .inf. file. I get a message that the location has no software for this device or something like that. What should i try next?

Re: PCI Device
I tried two more things last night. First, i tried going to start, all programs, system recovery, and then application and driver recovery. But under driver recovery, I could not find my modem. Second, I tried a system restore to a date before this problem arose, but when the computer I had the same two issues. The new hardware wizard came up for the PCI device and second, the computer said it did not have modem to establish an internet connection. So is my modem dead or does it need to be reseated? Thank you.

Re: PCI Device
You can try reseating it, but it sounds like the thunderstorm may have fired it. . the good news is that they are pretty reasonable these days.
