EEK! [resolved]No Sound

I bought a new computer in Oct '06, a Gateway Media Edition with a pentium D processor 805 dual core processing. I recently decided to restore my computer to it's original state with the operating disk provided with the computer, since I restored the computer, I have lost the sound and the microphone, the mic is in my web cam, my webcam works after I used the disk to supply the drivers as well as my mouse, I went to control panel and clicked on sounds and clicked on audio and clicked on test hardware and a window pops up saying "can not find file DpvSetup.exe, go to add/remove programs to intall driver". I have clicked on run and typed in the file and nothing happens, I called Gateway and paid $20.00 for another recovery disk that is supposed to have all the files that was put on my computer at the factory, I am still with out sound and mic, can anyone help me?

Re: No Sound

Click the thumbnail image above to see it fullsize.

Have you installed DirectX? Go to Start > Run > dxdiag > Sound tab. Adjust the Hardware Sound Acceleration slider and run the DirectSound tests. Post back with any problem in the Notes box after running the tests.

Re: No Sound

From what you have described that's the only solution I can think of right now. But let's try something else:
What does your screen look like when you press Control panel > Sounds and audio devices > Voice (voice playback) > Advanced > Performance?
Do you have any yellow or red "flags" in Device Manager (click show hidden devices in the "View" menu).

**edit** Too slow typing - Koala beat me

Re: No Sound

Hi thanks to both of you,Koala, I do have activex installed and Nicholas, I don't have any voice playback, it is shadowed or gray, don't work, and while I was checking activex, it said that no sound card is found, install a sound driver in add/remove,and I also went to the Microsoft website and updated some files but not for the sound, the only file in the device manager that is yellow is the PCI device

Re: No Sound

ActiveX? Koala was talking about DirectX. We need to find out what sound device you have so we can find a driver. Download and run Everest (in my sig). That program will produce a list of what's inside your computer. In Everest press Computer - then Summary. Save the report as plain text. Please post back, with that report as an attachment.

Re: No Sound

Have you installed DirectX?

Download Everest from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html then run it and go to Computer > Summary and post back with the information for Motherboard and Audio Adapter.

Re: No Sound

Good morning threer's. To attach the report to your reply you choose "go advanced" - in the new window you press the "paperclip" - browse to the Everest report you saved earlier, click OK - then click upload. When the attachment is uploaded - close the little window. Click the paperclip again - in the little box you click the file you uploaded.

Re: No Sound

See post #13 above. That's the only information we need from Everest at the moment.

If we know the motherboard and audio device, then we can try and locate the correct drivers for you to fix the problem with missing sound and mic.
