I can't get my sound driver installed!RESOLVED

I have a hp pavilion 542x that I reinstalled winXP on. I have no sound now and I've been trying to reinstall my driver. It says that I'm using "multimedia audio controller" but that the driver isn't installed. It says something about installing an AC'97 driver. Everytime I try to install the AC'97 driver it stops and my computer screen goes black and says that windows had to shut down to protect my computer. What that heck is going on??? I'm getting frustrated.

The download worked (didn't crash) but I still have no sound. After the dowload was done it restarted my computer but everything's still the same.

My System

Is the speaker icon down by the clock?

Go to start>controll panel>sounds and audio device and on the volume tab make sure mute is not checked.

No speaker icon... I went to sounds and audio device and it won't let me click on anything (volume settings) because it says "no audio device".

Pardon me if this sounds stupid but I have to ask to be sure, after the download completed you did double click the icon to execute correct?

If the answer is yes and you still get no sound it maybe time to consider a cheap sound card

After it completed it just said to "click here to restart you computer".

I'm about to to scream. I've redone winXP before and I just went to the hp site and downloaded the audio driver and everything was fine, but for some reason nothing works now.

It hasn't been disabled in bios.
