just reformatted - but no sound!

i just reformatted a friends computer with windows xp. he has a sony vaio, about 2 yrs old. anyway the only thing that's not working is the (onboard) sound.

when i go to any sound settings, it says that it's not installed. in the device manager, it has the no driver yellow symbol next to it.

so i tried to let windows search for one over the internet or on the windows xp.. and it won't find nothing.

he's comp illiterate and he doesn't know if the computer ever came with a backup disc or recovery disc, so i dont know if there were sound drivers before or not. i looked for sony vaio drivers but couldn't find any drivers at all.

but he's had the computer reformatted twice by a computer shop and they got the sound to work, so what am i missing? =\

Post the model number/ or try their webpage drivers and downloads.
