Re: want to upgrade some parts on my rig

I've found that the E2200 will hold back cards like the 4870 and 5770 at stock speeds. The card will still perform quite nicely, but not to its full potential. So some more processing power would be a good thing. Gateway doesn't list a full CPU support list for your motherboard, just a list of processor families, with no statement of what the BIOS supports. So any CPU upgrade will be a shot in the dark. Also, though the E2200 overclocks extremely well (I have mine OCd by 43%, when most CPUs will only go up ~30% on air without going out of voltage spec), the part of the BIOS used for overclocking is almost certainly removed because Gateway wants to reduce warranty claims. And since it appears to be a Gateway-only board made for Gateway by MSI, there's no chance of flashing it with a non-locked BIOS.

So you have a couple of options:

1.) pick a CPU from one of the following families:
* Wolfdale
* Yorkfield
* Core™2 Quad
* Core2 Duo
* Pentium® Dual Core
* Pentium
* Celeron®
Put it in and hope that it's compatible.

2.) Buy a new motherboard ($80-120) and a CPU heatsink ($35-60) and overclock the E2200 up to ~2.8GHz (where the bottleneck appears to become minimal). Be aware that overclocking voids the CPU warranty.

Or 3.) Buy a new motherboard and a new CPU, and possibly a heatsink so you can overclock.

Finally 4.) Live with slightly below-average performance from your card; still very good, but not to the full of what the card is capable of.

Re: want to upgrade some parts on my rig

Any of these will have a chance of working, but without a CPU support list I don't feel confident in giving you specific names.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e&Order=PRICED

Clock speed is the main determinant in gaming performance, but cores also play a role, and FSB and L2 cache play a role as well. I'll use the E8400 as my baseline "3.0GHz dual core CPU"

Games from ~2000-2008: 3.0GHz quad core = 3.0Ghz dual core
Games from ~2008-2009: 2.8GHz quad core = 3.0Ghz dual core
Games from ~2009-????: ~2.6-2.8GHz quad core = 3.0GHz dual core

Re: want to upgrade some parts on my rig

i would suggest going with a new cpu only, if it does not support it maybe you can return it, or exchange it for a different processor and try different ones that way. but hopefully it can support it.

Not knowing the specific Mobo you have makes it very difficult to determine what CPU's are compatible with the Mobo.
OEM Mobo's are made specifically for the retailer and are not easily identified.
I certainly don't suggest buying a CPU without knowing for certain it will work.

Re: want to upgrade some parts on my rig

Here's the link to the motherboard at Gateway. Leaves it pretty wide open for types of cpu. I'd try and see if you can borrow a cpu of the type you'd like to purchase and try it in your board, if you know anyone with one that would be willing to take it out briefly.

why keep the old one when you motherboard supports a quad core processor.
make sure it all is within the limitations of you motherboard that is in the hyperlink two replies up

Re: want to upgrade some parts on my rig

this processor SHOULD be supported by your motherboard. the front side bus is supported at 1333mhz. This processor should handle the video card nicely and make your system run smooth and fast.

Generally, yes; higher GHz means the CPU "cycles" more often per second. However some CPUs get more done in a cycle than others. Older AMD CPUs got the same performance as Intel Pentium CPUs with a lower clock speed. Modern AMD CPUs are a bit slower per clock.

Re: want to upgrade some parts on my rig

the one i listed is a quad core processor. at 2.83 ghz 12mb L2 cache
it uses 95 watts.

the one you listed is a dual core processor. at 3.06 ghz 2mb L2 cache
it uses 65 watts.

if you have power supply that can handle the quad core and the video card you want then i would go with the quad core.

lets get phaedrus2401's opinion first though. (if you are willing to spend the more money on a quad core processor.)

The Q9550 is faster than the E7600. An E8400 would provide the same performance as the Q9550 in older apps that can't use four cores; the Q9550 would have a slight edge in newer high-usage programs and some games.
