Problems with new rig
This seemed to fit best here, as I'm not sure what hardware in my new rig is causing problems.
Right, so after I first built my computer, I was running Vista on it, and I was playing games like Crysis (maxed out, 1920x1080, 2XAA) just fine. I loved it, my computer rocked. However, I recently upgraded to Windows 7, and got Resident Evil 5, as well as Mirrors Edge. In Mirrors Edge, I have had the game entirely lock up on me a few different times. It showed no reason for locking up, and before it did, it was running flawlessly. Resident Evil 5 is a similar case. It never drops below 60 FPS when maxed out, using 4XAA at 1920x1080. However, every now and again, the game will freeze, and then the image disappears. Following this, the game unfreezes, but my screen remains black (I can hear things going on, etc.) I had decided earlier to these freezings that I was going to try lightly OCing my i7 to 3.0GHZ or so, and so I downloaded Prime 95. I ran the Torture test, using the "In place large FFT setting", and my computer crashed within around 15 minutes. I have not OC'ed anything. I have a factory OC'ed 285 GTX, and that's it. I did, however, set my mobo's memory standard to 1600mhz (because mobo said that was default, and so did ram. Likewise, I decided to turn it up.) My RAM voltage is set to 1.65V, like it says to be. However, in bios, right next to the RAM voltage, there is another thing that reads 1.70V... not sure what that is, or why it gives me a higher voltage. During the Prime 95 tests, the highest temp that my CPU reached was 65C, which I'm quite sure is a safe temp. So tell me, what in the world is wrong? SPECS: EVGA X58 MATX 1366 6GB (3x2) OCZ Obsidian DDR3 1600 ram Core i7 920 @ 2.67 ghz BFG GTX 285 OCFU edition (1 GB) Hopefully you guys can help me. For now, I'll try setting my RAM back down to 1066mhz, and running the torture test again. |

Re: Problems with new rig
What power supply are you using? Brand, model, wattage. A shoddy or underpowered PSU could be causing an issue like this.

Re: Problems with new rig
Sunbeam Eco 750W PSU: LINK
Anyways, after dropping RAM back to 1067 mhz, the torture test remained running and stable for about an hour or more. So my new question is this: Why is it that even though my motherboards listed memory standard is 1600mhz, and my memory is listed at 1600mhz, it refuses to run properly when I set it that way? EDIT: Newegg's reviews for my ram bombshelled right after I bought my ram. I took a look, and apparently a lot of people are complaining that it crashes prime95,etc. Last edited by myersguy; 11-05-2009 at 08:57 PM. |

Re: Problems with new rig
Well, it sounds like faulty RAM then. Perhaps OCZ got a hold of a bunch of faulty chips that QA didn't detect. See if you can get a refund and pick up a different kit.
