Buy or Build? (specifications included)
I'm looking to get a new computer that can run:
Pure - racing game Spore - higher settings? source games; Portal - higher settings? So my family came up with these minimal requirements: Duo core - or up 2.8 ghz - clock speed is flexible 4 GB memory - could be bigger 500 GB hard drive - could be bigger DVD drive - not blue ray (could upgrade later for cheaper) 128/256 MB gpu, directX 10 or better - memory could be better Found these on newegg (any suggestions? One of these or a different one?): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883113102 - $570 Gateway DX4820-01 Core 2 Quad Q8300(2.50GHz) 6GB DDR3 750GB Intel GMA X4500 Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883227165 - $700 iBUYPOWER Gamer Power 905i Core i5 750(2.66GHz) 4GB DDR3 500GB ATI Radeon HD 4350 Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Free MS Windows 7 upgrade http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883229143 - $770 CyberpowerPC Gamer Infinity 6315 Core 2 Duo E8400(3.00GHz) 4GB DDR2 500GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883113110 - $790 Gateway DX4822-03 Core 2 Quad Q8400(2.66GHz) 8GB DDR2 1TB NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883113106 - $800 Gateway DX4820-02 23" Widescreen LCD - (screen included in price, approximate value = $170) Core 2 Quad Q8400(2.66GHz) 8GB DDR3 750GB NVIDIA GeForce G210 Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit That's about what we found. I don't think any of those (maybe the gamer infinity 6315) meet our needs exactly so I started looking at building, but with the price of vista or 7 (dependent on version) anywhere from $100 to $250 I don't think I can build the pc I want for less than one of these. Anyone got advice on which way to go:

Re: Buy or Build? (specifications included)
Build from scratch. You'll save money and get a better computer.
What's your budget? For $800 you could build a pretty good gaming computer that exceeds your requirements by a mile. For $600 you could still build a pretty ok computer that still exceeds your requirements.

Re: Buy or Build? (specifications included)
Wow, really because I've got a approximate budget of $700-$800 with OS
This is what I found for a computer build (just a simple frame for a build): ASUS P5QL/EPU LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard = $80 Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz = $168 4GB A=DATA DDR2 800 = $55 640GB HDD = $70 video card = $60 case = $65 Power Supply = $70 SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD Burner SATA = $31 windows 7 = $180 extra's / shipping = $30 _______________ total = $798 Last edited by Special2God; 11-01-2009 at 02:07 PM. |

Re: Buy or Build? (specifications included)
Definitely build yourself if possible. Prebuilts tend to use low quality parts...particularly the power supply.
Have you looked at this thread? Want to Build A New Intel or AMD Computer? Here are 6 suggested models with Spec Team Mate Phædrus2401 posted this $650 gaming build. $650 gaming build I also noted in Post#3 that Windows 7 listed at $180. The Upgrade version of 7 Premium is $119 and many places have it for $100.

Re: Buy or Build? (specifications included)
Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R Intel P45 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128359 $119.99 - $15 MIR CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0Ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037 $167.99 RAM: OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 CL5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227199 $79.99 Graphics card: PowerColor Radeon HD 5770 1GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131181 $159.99 Power supply: Corsair VX550W http://www.frys.com/product/5539820?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG (out of stock at newegg, had to go to Frys) $79.99 Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320 $69.99 Optical drive: Lite-On iHAS-324-98 DVD buner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106334 $31.99 Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116754 $106.99 TOTAL: $816.92 - MIR: $801.92 EDIT: The $188 version of Windows 7 is the "full" retail version. Don't get the retail version, because you're paying $75 more for things you will never use. The OEM version of Windows 7 is only $107 and is just the operating system and basic software, and that should be all you need. EDIT #2: Gaaah. I left out a case? Dur dur dur. I'll have to cut something else to fit it in under budget... maybe cut the graphics card down to a 5750 and the CPU to an E7600. That gives you ~$50 to play with for a case, that would buy you an Antec 200 or 300 or CM Centurion 5.

Re: Buy or Build? (specifications included)
Ok, Thanks!
Tyree, yes, I think I've looked at the building thread before. Phædrus2401 what you named off for parts seems to make good building sense. Although, I was noticing that the gamer infinity 6315 has close to the same specs your build parts would have, other than the better motherboard and video card. Also quality should be better? Thanks

Re: Buy or Build? (specifications included)
They use lower-quality parts. The parts most often skimped on are the power supply (a cheap 700W can be worse than a quality 550W), the motherboard (notice they don't specify the brand; probably a cheap Foxconn board), and the graphics card and RAM (they tend to use cheap off-brands). I will say that would be a good price; it might be on clearance. I still wouldn't recommend buying it, though, plus it's out of stock.
