Power Supply...

Hey all im making a custom pc and i am currently searching for a psu and came over the CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX. I read the reviews and many have stated that they have had loud clicking noises from the fan inside / they don't know where from, do you think i should invest into this psu? If so should i perform surgery on it and change the fan?

PSU HERE (at newegg)

Thanks for your continued help everyone!!!!

Re: Power Supply...

You might want to consider the new Corsair 950TX which is cheaper at $180, has a stronger +12V line than the 1000HX, and has been getting some excellent reviews.

Re: Power Supply...

A single +12V rail is more efficient than 2 or 4. Both the 1000HX and the 950TX will easily support Crossfire HD5870s.

[SOLVED] Power Supply...

Wow! that looks very promising just like windows 7 which I've downloaded (90 day trail) and its working like a charm, but i have gone back to xp because my parts aren't nearly good enough lol (3 yr system :[ ) which is the reason for learning all about the different parts, specs and their meanings also how to put a computer together.....

The only hard thing i think will be the cable management in the Antec Twelve Hundred :D

Thanks so much Koala

Re: Power Supply...

Get the 750W Corsair (on special for $109/Newegg) and stay with one good GPU. The cost compared to the small increase in performance using two GPU's is not a good investment.

Re: Power Supply...

As i currently live in Australia i can't take the opportunity to buy off Newegg as such. But i think i'll go with the 950W, it has plenty of power and a single 12v (1's apparently better than more rails) unless you guys think otherwise and have some sort of idk rebut lol :P XD

Thanks all!
djjordie.

Re: Power Supply...

Single vs. multiple rail is a bit of a controversy.
Seasonic (makes Corsair) uses Dual rails so multiple rails can't be all bad.
If the PSU is a quality unit it will supply clean efficient power no matter how many rails it uses.
The 950 Corsair will serve your needs.

Re: Power Supply...

I agree, there's nothing wrong with multiple +12V rails. I use a 650W Thermaltake Toughpower that has 4 rails. It's been going strong for a couple of years now, running 24/7 under heavy stress with no problems and very stable output. My next PSU will be a single rail unit though for the improved efficiency, and because that's the direction PSU manufacturers are moving these days.

As Tyree says, a single HD5870 is more than enough for most gamers. Are you sure you need to spend more money on a second card that will only give you a 15-30% framerate boost over a single card at the expense of higher power requirements and higher system temperatures (and higher electricity bills)?

The graphics card industry is moving so fast that by the time you get round to installing the second HD5870, there will be new single cards available that offer much better performance than 2 HD5870s. So if you're determined to buy 2 cards, do it now rather than one now and the second a few weeks down the line.
