New mobo, I hear it's very picky. Help?

Okay, I spent way too much money on a system in late 07. And the mother board finally gave out.

How do you feel about this rig?

The only change from that build to current is the video card. It is a high end ati and I don't remember off hand what it is (my machine is across state lines ). It very well could be:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150442

Or maybe it's a gen below. I really don't know. I don't think it really matters. What does matter is that a good friend of mine has offered me a motherboard he had laying around unopened.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813141009

From what those reviews and he said, it looks very picky. So, I had no idea what ram to get. Any help you guys could provide would be amazing.

I was also thinking about getting some more harddrive space. A TB or 2 to replace the 500. Any input on that is welcome as well.

I've stopped using nVidia period but it's well known that ATI and nVidia baords don't play well.

Re: New mobo, I hear it's very picky. Help?

These are things I don't like to hear. BTW I was very wrong on the card guess. I currently have:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150359

So is it gonna be more of a hassle to make this board work than to get one that will work with what I have?

Still an ATI card. A very nice one at that.

Should work fine, but I don't recommend DDR3 simply because it's too new to gauge reliability. In general it generally reports as having a few issues that'll cause a few headaches.

Nvidia makes excellent GPU but there Mobo's do NOT libve up to that quality.
Asus & Gigabyte are good Mobo's with good support.

Re: New mobo, I hear it's very picky. Help?

The board you started with is a much better board than the XFX; but free is hard to pass up at times! although nvidia chipsets dont play well with intel processors and are buggy as hell.

in your shoes I would RMA the gigabyte board back and wait until you get it replaced, that P35-ds4 will run circles around that 790 board!

I like your attitude, sir. Lol. I bought the gigabyte about 2 years ago. I'm not really sure how the RMA process works, this is my first time.

Turns out I had an extended service plan on the Gigabyte through Newegg. So I just called them and and set up a claim. About to pack it up and ship it off.

Okay. I so I'm keepin the gigabyte.

I would like to get some better ram. What do you guys think?

New HDs as well.

Was looking at getting a Bluray drive.

You guys have been great.

Re: New mobo, I hear it's very picky. Help?

are you possibly interested in overclocking in the future ?

or are you more of a standard / stock speed kind of user?

Re: New mobo, I hear it's very picky. Help?

Update!

Newegg no longer has my motherboard, but they do sign checks.

So, I need to pick a new one. Any thoughts? Probably staying DDR 2, would like to get a higher speed ram though. Keepin my XFX 4890.

Thanks in advance.

What are your needs and what is your budget? Asus & Bigabyte are good Mobo's.
