Re: New Gaming PC
Hi, welcome to TSF
Looks good. What resolution will you be playing games at? The 2gb VRAM on the HD4890 is only needed for VERY high resolutions with high texture settings, so you could save some money by going for the 1GB card instead and get exactly the same framerates. You could also consider the Samsung SpinPoint F1 or Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 hard drives which are just as good as the Hitachi. They're all in the same price range. Good idea to get the Zalman cooler if you're going to be overclocking. Also, get some Arctic Silver thermal paste to replace the stock paste/pad.

Re: New Gaming PC
Yes, the motherboard is fine, good for overclocking.
What software do you use to record the game videos? You might want to get a small secondary hard drive for recording. If you only have one hard drive, it has to work extra hard accessing the system/games files while saving the video at the same time. This can reduce your framerates.

Re: New Gaming PC
I use quite an expensive metal Razer mouse mat, but I wouldn't recommend spending more than necessary. Any cloth mat other than those really cheap nasty ones will be fine.
For gaming, go for a wired mouse rather than wireless. Logitech do a good range. I've been using the excellent Logitech G9 for the last few months, but the newer ones might be better. Same for keyboards, avoid the wireless ones. There so many good cases to choose from, it's hard to recommend just one. Make sure it has plenty of space inside for airflow and future upgrades, and don't go for one of the cheap ones. Coolermaster and Lian Li are recommended brands. Something in the £70-100 range with good customer reviews would be ideal.

Re: New Gaming PC
I agree with Koala. A fancy mouse mat is useless and offers no benefit over even a sheet of paper. As for a 2GB video card unless you plan to do gaming at VERY high resolutions with tons of detail then it's wasted money.
Also, the Hitachi Deskstar series are also called Deathstars because they have a very high failure rate. Western Digital and Samsung make awesome drives.

Re: New Gaming PC
Also, you've chosen a tri-channel set of RAM. This is intended for those using the Intel X58 chipset, which has six DIMM slots, while most motherboards have only four. You'll need to pick out a 4GB set of RAM, as the tri-channel may not be compatible.

Re: New Gaming PC
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (500gb, SATA2, 7200rpm, 16mb cache) - £36 inc VAT
Samsung F1 (500gb, SATA2, 7200rpm, 16mb cache) - £45 inc VAT Your link to the Samsung F3 is also good for the price. Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel - £80 inc VAT (anything over 4gb is useless unless you're running a 64bit operating system, and even then you'll only be using 2-4gb even when heavily multitasking) Dual channel won't decrease your computer's performance. It's what most people use.

I'm a fan of Samsung's hard drives and have never had a problem with them. Dual channel vs single channel doesn't offer whiz-bang speed differences but if you're a gamer the bump up it does give is worth it. The price difference is really negligible as they often come in paired kits which are often cheaper than buying two individual sticks.
