Automatic off

Hi, I just built a computer from a few parts which I know were, as of yesterday, working.

core 2 e6700
nvidia 680i mobo
8800 GTX.
4gb ram.

I added a new PSU (650 W).

When I turn it on, the system starts (plugged screen + power in) and it runs through the starting screen with the system components on it. At some point before or after this (within 10 seconds, the computer shuts itself off completely.

I was wondering which was the most likely component to cause this, and if anyone had any suggestions.

I checked for similar threads, and couldn't find any, sorry if i missed one.

I can provide more info if needed.

Thanks :)

Re: Automatic off

I've fiddled with the cpu heat sink, and now it lasts a bit longer before it dies. Usually when it tries to do something more intensive (like choose a language in windows 7 installer).

Does the mean it is definitely the cpu heat sink?

Thanks

Re: Automatic off

You might not have seated the heat sink properly. I would try removing the heat sink and cleaning it very well with a high quality rubbing alcohol (90%) and apply some arctic silver thermal paste (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-007-_-Product) and see if that helps. Follow the directions for the arctic silver to the letter. Too much is about as bad as not enough.
