cant load os in new build

I recently built my first pc it seems to be running fine everything seems ok in the bios except my hard drive and my dvd drive, they are both reconized and listed but the thing is they are in brackets does mean that they are disabled, if it does could anyone tell me how to rectify this, when I try to load the os the dvdr light blinks as if it is trying to boot but nothing happens and I get a message(Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key) Ive tried changing cds and pressing a key and the same thing happens light on drive flashes but nothing just the same message, Ive tried to load xp pro, win7rc and linux, Ive tried the mobo support cd to see if it could boot from that with no sucess, Ive tried the cd that came with the dvd drive, Ive updated the bios to the latest version, Ive tried installing win7rc onto the hard drive via another pc then trying to boot from that with no success also, Ive plugged the dvdrom into another working pc then putting it back into the new one to see if that would do anything but still nothing. Ive not got much experiance with pcs, only bought my first pc in dec08 and this is my first build so any ideas would be extremely welcome.

cheers Ian

Re: cant load os in new build

Do you have the optical drive set as "First Boot Device" in the Bios?
Set SATA to IDE in the Bios.

Re: cant load os in new build

Set the drives to be seen as IDE or IDE mode if that is not the default.
Are you trying to Install XP or Vista?

Re: cant load os in new build

thanks for getting back to me so soon, yes the optical drive is first boot device in bios, hdd second and removable device third and sata is set to ide. In the (Boot Device Priority) my dvdrw and hdd are enclosed in parenthesis and in the right hand help colum it says (A device enclosed in parenthesis has been disabled in the corresponding type menu) maybe it has something do do with why it wont load the os I have tried to load xp pro, win7rc and linux all with the same result same message each time, in the bios the options for setting dvdrw are(not installed, Auto, CDRom, ARMD) and for the hdd (Disable ,Auto) so ive set the dvdrw to auto ,hdd to auto also

Re: cant load os in new build

Which Sata ports are you using?
Have you tried to enable them in the Bios?
Try hooking up the DVD drive only to see if it's still disabled.

Re: cant load os in new build

Concentrate on the Bios recognizing and enabling the drives.

Hook up only the DVD drive data cable to Sata 1 (Red) power connector fully seated in the drive, is the DVD drive now enabled?

Re: cant load os in new build

dvdrw in sata1 red on its own still the same, same message. In the bios the drive still disabled it shows up like this

Boot Device Priority

1st Boot Device [CDROM:PM-TSSTcorp ]
2nd Boot Device [Hard Drive]
3rd Boot Device [Removable Dev.]

and in the Main bios

>SATA 1 : [TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH]

I dont know if this has any relevance but in the bios Power>Hardware Monitor the chassis fans havent been reconized Chassis Fan 1 Speed and Chassis Fan 2 Speed and showing up as [N/A]

Re: cant load os in new build

The brackets don't mean it's disabled.
See the Bios section of the manual that is how they are shown.

Pull the board out and do the bench test to eliminate a possible case short, 1 stick of Ram the Cpu & heatsink/fan, Video card, only follow the steps here do not skip any> How to Bench Test Your System

Re: cant load os in new build

tried disabling ide features in bios rebooted still the same, I went through the bios disabling and reactivating everything just in case it would do anything, I tried swapping sata connections on the mobo still the same message, I didnt really want to take everything apart but I guess there is nothing else left to try so I will give it a go, would it be ok to leave the cpu and heatsink/fan installed as I found it difficult to attache the heatsink/fan also Ive not got any thermal paste left, Ive been monitoring the cpu temp since mon and it seems to be ok 39 C in the bios. I keep thinking that maybe there is something that I have to do to the dvdrw to enable it before it will be able to boot see Im unsure of what to do to format hdd or if I have to do something simular to the dvdrw. Does the os format the drives before installation. Ive probibly forgot or dont know something simple. Thanks for all the help so far its well appreciated cheers

Re: cant load os in new build

Yes, leave the CPU/Heatsink installed. If the optical drive is set to First Boot Device in the Bios then it should boot from that drive.

Remove EVERYTHING from the case
Set the motherboard on a non conductive surface. The motherboard box is perfect for this. DO NOT PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE STATIC BAG! It can actually conduct electricity! We are going to try and assemble a running system outside of the case.
Install the CPU and heat sink.
Install 1 stick of RAM.
Install the video card and attach the power supply connection(s) to the card if your card needs it.
Connect the monitor to the video card.
Connect the power supply to the motherboard with both the 24pin main ATX Power connection and the separate 4 or 8 pin power connection.
Connect power to the power supply.
Do NOT connect ANYTHING else. Make sure you have the power connector on the CPU fan connected.
Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard. Consult your motherboard manual to find which two pins connect to your case's power switch. Then touch both pins with a screwdriver to complete the circuit and boot the system.

If all is well, it should power up and you should get a display. Then assemble the parts into the case and try again. If the system now fails to boot, you have a short in the case and need to recheck your motherboard standoffs.

If the system does not boot after this process, then you most likely have a faulty component. You'll need to swap parts, start with the power supply, until you determine what is defective.
