First Computer Build/ compatibility check

Hey everyone,

This is going to be my first computer build and I want to see if I'm getting in way over my head before I actually start buying all the parts. I'm planning on using the computer for gaming mostly (COD 4, Fallout3, Supreme Commander, etc..). I'm trying to keep the costs under $4,000.

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119187

Mother Board: EVGA E760 Classified
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188048

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 295 1792MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130504

Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling T12W 1200W ATX12V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703012

Processor: Intel Core i7-950 3.06GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115211

Memory: CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6x2GB)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145235

Hardrives: Wester Digital VelociRaptor 300 GB 10000 RPM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136322

Wester Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284

Blu-Ray Player: LG 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 40x
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136162

DVD Player: LG 22X DVD R DVD Burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136144

CPU Fan: ZALMAN 120mm
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118046

Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102021

And I plan on running either Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit or the new windows 7 depending on when it comes out. Also I was wondering how difficult it would be to over clock a set up like this on just air alone. I live in the USA and I'm trying to get the parts through well know dependable sites/stores.

Any advise/ input would be appreciated.

Re: First Computer Build/ compatibility check

Everything there is *way* more than you need. You could get more gaming performance than that build for under $1500, and with a lot less hassle. I would not spend $4000 on ANY computer, at least not a gaming one.

Don't go for the i7 Nehalem core. It is *not* good for gaming, it's a workstation CPU that Intel advertised as "the fastest thing ever" so a lot of gamers bought it. Then i5 came out and they're regretting the $500 hole in their pocket.

If you want the latest and greatest, CPU-wise, use this Mobo+RAM+CPU combination:

Motherboard:
Asus P7P55D Intel P55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131404
$149.99

CPU
Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115215
$199.99

RAM:
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 CL9 1.65V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145260
$80.99

OR if you want something proven stable (which I would recommend for a first time builder), go for this combination:

Motherboard:
Asus P5Q Pro Turbo Intel P45
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131377
$134.99

CPU:
Intel Core 2 DUo E8500 3.16GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115036
$189.99

RAM:
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066 CL5 2.2V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227298
$71.99

The power supply, while high-quality, is far more than you'll need. Go with this unit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...011&Tpk=HX850W
The quality is just as high, the power it provides is closer to what you need, and it's about $300 and a bit cheaper.

The GTX295 is a nice graphics card, but the 5870 is more powerful and doesn't have the issues that dual-GPU cards have:

The Western Digital Raptor drives are not a good purchase. One of our tech team members swapped out the 500GB Caviar Black drive he had in his computer for a Raptor and asked his family if they could notice any difference at all when performing various tasks. They couldn't, and neither could he. They also have a much higher failure rate compared to standard 7200RPM drives. Don't bother with it, or get another Caviar Black 500GB-1TB drive.

The Blu-Ray player is your call, but unless you actually watch Blu-Ray movies on a regular basis I wouldn't bother.

The rest looks okay.

Remember, More $$$$ does NOT, NOT NOT NOT, always equal more performance. Going with a $4000 build your first time is a very bad idea on several levels.

Re: First Computer Build/ compatibility check

Phædrus2401 has posted some sound advise. No matter how you decide to go, use a Asus or Gigabyte Mobo.
