Re: computer building: 1000$ limit!

also, i dont know if u guys remember back wheni posted that power supply problem, it wasnt the power supply... right now im running a custom made computer made by liscenced professionnals wich is:

ASUS P5N-D motherboard (with Energy Processor)
Intel Quad core Q8200 2.33 Ghz
3GB DDR2 @ 1066Mghz (kingston)
500 GB Seagate RAID 0 hard drive (7 200 RPM, 3.0 GB/S)
ANTEC 900 Gaming Case, 3 120mm fans and 1 230mm fan.
LG optical drive, DVD/CD Reader and RW.
Nividia 9800 GTOC (manufactured overclocked from 600Mghz to 625 Mghz) with 512 MB of GDDR 3 (or GDDR 5 dont remember)
D-Link DWA "N" series wireless network adapter
realtek sound card

and to power all that: a 465W power supply... you guys told me that wasnt enough but what i havent told u guys is that the power supply was 80% efficient in power wise... add to that the EPU (Energy Processing Unit)... am i ok with this?

i mean if professionnals (liscenced) built it it should be ok right?

"Licensed professional" and "knows what they're doing" don't always go hand in hand. You might get that system to turn on and even run for a while on a 465W power supply, but I would be very concerned about long-term stability. Putting too much draw on a power supply can cause voltage fluctuation, which over time destroys your RAM and VRAM. If it's a poor quality unit it may fail under the load during heavy applications like games, in which case it could destroy the rest of your computer if it doesn't have decent OVP.

I would recommend a quality 550W unit at minimum for that build, preferably 650W in case you decide to upgrade in the future.

There are other problems with that build. The Q8200 is not a very good gaming processor, as the two extra cores don't make up for the low clock speed. Even an E6300 would be comparable, or even slightly better, than the Q8200. You should be looking at an E7000 or E8000 series CPU. Kingston is an ok RAM manufacturer, but you can do better with one of these brands: Corsair, OCZ, Crucial, Patriot, or G.Skill. Having a hard drive in RAID0 is an unnecessary expense, in my opinion, as it provides very little performance improvement for the cost. I would get a P5Q board over P5N if you can.

Rest looks ok. What's the brand on the 9800GT?

Re: computer building: 1000$ limit!

That Mobo is Deactivated and you definitely want a newer/faster chipset than a 965.
Go with a Dual Core CPU and larger PSU as Phædrus2401 has pointed out.
Kingston & Crucial RAM are fine for budget builds but you'll want some better quality RAM for gaming. OCZ - Corsair G.Skill are very good.

Re: computer building: 1000$ limit!

interesting... my computer runs fine and stays below the 40 degrees celcius with the power supply... and i can run fine as heck Empire Total War and crysis on my part... well with windows 7 that is... of course crysis aint at max graphics but empire Total War is... and my computer runs fine... well for the long term damage ill be checking on that very often although the guys that built my computer were liscenced professionnals, i did see proof lol.

EDIT: sry i forgot to say that the PSU was custom made from a small company.

well im ok with the computer i currently have right now ill be looking into better quality later i just wanted a good gaming computer that had good quality/very good pricing and i got it.

btw i have the Nvidi 9800 GT OC (BFG Tech)

ok back to what i originaly wanted lol

Re: computer building: 1000$ limit!

The minimum power requirement for a 9800GT is 400W so you have an underpowered PSU.
The Hdd & Mobo you have selected show as Deactivated items on Newegg.
Phædrus2401 and I have gave you our opinions and suggestions on what you had listed. I would suggest looking at this thread for some ideas. Want to Build A New Intel or AMD Computer? Here are 6 suggested models with Spec
