New build shows no BIOS or beeps

I have just completed assembly of my first computer build and when I turn it on I get a blank monitor screen and no beeps from the case. The entire system activates for about 5 to 10 seconds with all fans and lights running, then shuts off for another 5 to 10 seconds before turning itself on again. Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be?

Components:
- GA-X48-DQ6 motherboard
- ATI radeon HD 4890 vid card
- intel core 2 duo processor
- 2 gig Gskill RAM in slot 1
- 500W PSU

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

your power supply is not capable of running your system, you need a higher wattage.

I asume you have a hard drive and a dvd drive? if so then you need a higher wattage psu atleast 650 watts but I would recommend 700w minimum plus you need a decent brand like cosair or seasonic

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

My friend has a very similiar system with three harddrives and a DVD burner and he uses 500 watts with no problem. I actually only have the single harddrive and no optical drives whatsoever, so do you still think the power supply is the culprit? To be more specific, its a Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU that came with the case I purchased.

Thanks for the help!

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

Antec power supplies have had reliabilty issues lately because they are using cheap suppliers to make them so it very well could be the PSU.

What sort of PSU does your mate have? and does he have a 4890 graphics card

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

Ask your mate if you can borrow his PSU to test, if that works then its your psu if it doesn't then there is something else wrong

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

I tried running the system without the video card thinking that it would relieve some power, and it yielded the same result. I will try using a seperate PSU to run the video card at my friend's house later today and let you know what happens.

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

I just tried running the system after replacing the video card with a small generic one (ATI rage) and using a seperate, 400W PSU (only one available unfortunately) and the exact same problem occured. Would the power supply need to be 500W + for the mobo to register it during BIOS startup? Or does this new development perhaps mean the mobo is the issue?

... and how much would it cost me to take this in for a professional look-over?

Thanks again!

Have you made sure everything is connected properly?

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

I just reconnected all of the power and switches etc during switching the PSU and the video card and the problem persisted in every scenario. It might be worth noting that the CPU fan starts and stops during the motherboard's power cycling... maybe the mobo detects that its not spinning and turns off automatically? I'm at my wits end for solutions right now.

Thanks a bunch for your help GBL :)

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

That power supply definitely won't pull that video card, so be sure you use a less power hungry video card when you test this. Here is what I would do:

Bench Test Your System

Re: New build shows no BIOS or beeps

I removed all removeable components as well as replacing the PSU with a 400W (only other one available unfortunately) and replaced the video card with a much smaller ATI Rage card. Under this new configurement the exact same problem as before occured.

Tumbleweed, I looked specifically for a 500W PSU as the specs on the video card page said that is what it required: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814150359 . Thanks so much for the link, I will bench test this build tomorrow if possible.
