AMD or Intel?

Hello,

Wanting to get a new system, but don't have a lot of cash to spend. I have saved around 600 bucks so far and have seen a few systems, mainly on newegg and tigerdirect ranging from 500-700. Also, saw one system at bestbuy for 600.

The bestbuy system has this in in
Intel® Core™2 Quad processor Q8200
Features 4 processing cores, 1333MHz frontside bus, 4MB L2 cache and 2.33GHz processor speed per core. 6GB DDR2 memory
For multitasking power, expandable to 16GB.
# Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support
Records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media.
# 750GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 rpm)
Provides plenty of storage space and fast read/write times.
# NVIDIA GeForce G100 graphics
Features up to 512MB of video memory for lush images. Supports 7.1-channel high-definition audio. HDMI port and DVI port for connecting HD components.

Anyway, not for sure if I should go towards amd or intel, and if so which one. I know the I7 is the latest chip, but just can't afford that one.

Thank you

Phil

Re: AMD or Intel?

I build & use Intel only but that's a personal preference.
Save your money and build your own. Pre-builts very often use low quality parts to keep costs down.
Do you need peripherals (Monitor-keyboard-Mouse-OS)?

Re: AMD or Intel?

This thread has an $800 build. Deleting/changing a couple of items brings it into the $700 range. I don't know what your specific needs/wants are in a pC but you could even build it cheaper with a mATX Mobo and some other changes.

Re: AMD or Intel?

That best buy system isn't great, low end quad core, your better off with high end dual core and you should really be going for system with a dedicated graphics card depending on what you'll be using the system for

I've found a great deal at cyberpower
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Mega_Special_I/
Decent AMD 250 BE, 4GB Corsair RAM , big 500GB HDD and great GTS 250 graphics card, the power supply my need changing to a better branded one such as the thermaletake 650w on the customize page or you can get a Corsair 650W TX for $100, $80 after MIR on newegg. Don't forget to change OS to with windows 7 upgrade voucher which is free.

Re: AMD or Intel?

Do you know what brand of PSU is included? All I see is a 600W PSU.

Re: AMD or Intel?

Generally speaking, right now, you will get higher performance with intel . . more bang for the buck with AMD. I have not built a Intel system for several years because of the pricing diffferential

Re: AMD or Intel?

I use AMD only now. Have since my old 486. You might get a little performance edge with Intel but in real-world use it's too little to make the extra cost worth it.
