would this work?
Hi i'm new to building computers and i was thinking about this as a sort of cheap starter which would be added too over time
i have said that for my inicial budget of £100 (which is mainly to get a good foundation you know A decent mobo and cpu with plenty of opportunity to build on and add new things too) i intend to run ubuntu on it to begin with but in a while I may convert it to a home server and just take out the hard disk and add new ones for the server and put the old one in a new pc. I like the look of this case http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Pr...-PSU---audio-- and I particularly like this mobo (yes I know it's off ebay but it's one of those ebay companies and I couldn't afford this mobo otherwise!) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-PRECISION...#ht_3984wt_708 Could I have your opinions do you think this comes with two intel xeon cpu's and ram? or have i got the wrong end of the stick because it does say 1.8 ghz isn't that quite bad? and then this hdd http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136032 I already have a graphics card is AGP4x the same as agp pro 4x I know I am slightly over budget but i have a second case which the motherboard can go in for a while please can I have your suggestions (and criticisms0 i am not sure about the mobo i.e wether it is a good deal or not thanks |

Re: would this work?
I have no knowledge of home servers but I'm sure others will also tell you that motherboard and cpu is old so this will limit components such as ram and graphics card which will lead to an overall slow-normal not ideal computer.

Re: would this work?
awww though I guess when i saw the mobo on ebay I knew it was too good to be true are well there was this
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Pr...Intel-G31-DDR2 I know it nothing compared to the other one but compared to the mobo in there at the mo I also find it very hard to find cheap ide hdd so I gues it makes sense to move to this. it also means i need a processor like this one! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INTEL-CORE-2-D...#ht_2002wt_958 |

Re: would this work?
You know you can run server software on a normal desktop computer, right? You don't need to buy dedicated hardware, especially old stuff, when modern desktop hardware will work better and is easier to find. My friend converted his old Pentium 4 box (plus an external hard drive cage) into a Debian home file server for his whole family. Maybe you could do the same? As long as you're not running a high traffic website or a game server that should be all you need.

Re: would this work?
hmmm I have thought of that i.e vmware server however The server thing was something for the long future I don't think my dads ready (it would also take ages to sort everything out so it's protected against my mum)

Re: would this work?
Not VMware, it's pretty expensive (at least for the good versions) unless you can get a hobbyist's license. Go with VirtualBox, pretty much the same thing but free.
