3D Graphics, Part II the full build
So I posted in an earlier thread (here: 3D graphics computer) asking for parts for a computer used for computer graphics and I used the response as a jumping off point for the rest of my build, now I'd like to know if all these pieces should work together, if everyone thinks its the best bits for the money (I went over budget already with this) or any other tidbits you can deduce.

I've got another question, about thermal paste, is it definitely needed, and easy to prepare and setup without messing up everything? This will be my first build so any input or advice would be appreciated Last edited by tiernoj; 07-13-2009 at 01:47 PM. |

Re: 3D Graphics, Part II the full build
The stock heat sink will come with a thermal pad already installed on it, thermal would be need if you intend to overclock or have to remove the heat sink once installed the thermal pad like thermal paste can only be used once.
Neither of the Quadro cards are real power hungry drop your PSU down to 550VX it will be a lot quieter then the OCZ unit> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9004&Tpk=550VX I'm a little concerned if an 80Gig hard drive will be large enough for you. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136074 |

To add to wrench97's suggestions. Drop the RAM to DDR2800.

Re: 3D Graphics, Part II the full build
hi, change the graphics card to a HIS Radeon 4890 it's also $190
Or the cheaper alternative would be this XFX geforce 9800gtx, I can't believe it's only 100 dollars for such a great graphics card! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150422 Dacads |

Actually, he's going for a workstation-class graphics. What you suggested can do it but are more optimized for gaming.

Re: 3D Graphics, Part II the full build
I'll definitely consider the quieter fan though at this point im used to a noisy box in the room, Maybe having the 700w fan would be good for an upgrade though? Hard to say.
and as far as the 80 gig, its just for programs and the os, the bulk of things will go on my old 500 gig ide drive. What would be the advantage of dropping down the ram if the price is roughly the same? The issue of the graphics card is a confusing one for sure. The quadros i've read are just for workstation graphics, though I never know how much the specialization balances out with pure specs of the card. Its supposedly almost the same hardware as a cheaper geforce gaming card but the firmware is different, and I've read real wary reviews of just trying to change that much. Does anyone have a more solid grasp on just how much I would get out of pure specs and just how much is the build of the card so to speak? |

Re: 3D Graphics, Part II the full build
The workstation cards are designed beefier to stand up to graphics production for over 8 hour days and 24/7 on pc's while the GPU may be the same the card design and components(Caps, resistors IC's) are stronger as well as the firmware, the raw card speed is slower thus the temps tend to be lower, they are not designed to have fast transitions like you would have in a game changing scenes or scanning, but rather more precision in placement of objects in a 3d graphic.
