dell issue...
my friend got a dimension 3000 series and it wont make it past the start up screen. its not memory. i also have a dimension series dell and grafic card fryed out. the battery got really hot and started to smoke and i was thinking that or motherboard can be the issue. i removed the hard drive and tryed to put it on my other computer and it says operating system not found and checked for 2 other hard drives that i have. does anyone know if its the battery or if it motherboard? and why does my other computer say operating system not found?

Re: dell issue...
you cant transplant hard drives quite that easy ............you would have to run a win xp repair install at the very least
its the completly different hardware and drivers that stop it from booting .......each time a windows OS boots ........it looks for the hardware signature it expects to find ....when it doesnt find the expected hardware you get a no boot or looping restart

Re: dell issue...
The hdd's may all have XP on them but were they previously in that PC?
As linderman stated, the Hdd "looks" for a specific hardware signature and if that particular signature isn't found it won't boot. You can pull he files from the hdd(s) by slaving them into another PC or using a Hdd to USB adapter. I use the Apricorn model. It is very reliable and comes with a version of Acronis. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...der%20Changers

Re: dell issue...
The Dell Reinstallation CD will work on any drive . . but you will loose your data if you reinstall the operating system.
If you are just trying to salvage data, connect the drived to a working pc in polace of the CD/DVD drive . . that way it will not try to boot from it.

Re: dell issue...
I would suspect the Mobo was smoking and not the battery. Check the area around the battery holder. If it were me, I would remove the Mobo and inspect it for burned spot and burned capacitors.
If everything looked OK, I would do an On the Bench build. 1) Remove EVERYTHING from the case 2) Set the motherboard on a non conductive surface. The motherboard box is perfect for this. DO NOT PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE STATIC BAG! It can actually conduct electricity! We are going to try and assemble a running system outside of the case. 3) Install the CPU and heat sink. 4) Install 1 stick of RAM. 5) Install the video card and attach the power supply connection(s) to the card if your card needs it. 6) Connect the monitor to the video card. 7) Connect the power supply to the motherboard with both the 24pin main ATX Power connection and the separate 4 or 8 pin power connection. 8) Connect power to the power supply. 9) Do NOT connect ANYTHING else. Make sure you have the power connector on the CPU fan connected. 10) Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard. Consult your motherboard manual to find which two pins connect to your case's power switch. Then touch both pins with a screwdriver to complete the circuit and boot the system.
