How does this look on the gamer scale?

Hey all,

My basement flooded a while back and my brand spanking new, out of the box HP dc5750, dual core 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 360Gb HD, ati radeon Graphics was destroyed. I was heartbroken. The motherboard was the only thing that had visual damage, so I looked into replacing that.

After getting off the phone with a very good friend of mine about this, he said that it would, in the long run, be easier and cheaper to get a new computer than to try and salvage everything I could from the dead one...

So there I was, looking through the HP store website when I found this,

Linky: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...1-3974860.html

This triple processor, 3GB RAM, powerhouse caught my eye with its outstandingly low price and amazing RAM... Everything was looking great until it came to the Graphics card. Now, I am well aware this is an easy fix, but I was wondering, will this play any of my games? Its a Integrated AMD Radeon 3100 Graphics.

My games consist of everything from Empire earth (the old one...) to C&C3: Kanes wrath. I was also wondering if I had misread the label, the processor name is AMD Phenom X3 8600B processor (2.3 GHz, 1.5 MB Dedicated L2 cache, 2 MB Shared L3 cache, HT bus 3.0). That "X3" means that it has three processors, or am I just an idiot?

I would furthermore like to know if that proc is fast, if there are indeed, three of them.

Thanks a lot for the future replys :)

Re: How does this look on the gamer scale?

I would also suggest building your own. Pre-builts tend to use low quality parts and are not upgrade friendly. The above build looks good but I would drop the RAM to PC6400 and save a few bucks. The Corsair rebate is pretty much worthless because it is a credit card good for Corsiar purchases only.

Re: How does this look on the gamer scale?

Well, I am not ultra tech savy. Im 14 and a huge nerd. I really only have about 450$, so the above computer would be a stretch, but it may work out.

One of the only things that would stump me is installing the processors, because I know their is this special type of "gunk" that absorbes heat.

Thanks anyway :)

Re: How does this look on the gamer scale?

The gunk is called thermal paste. The heatsink will already have a thermal pad on it (similar to paste), so you don't need to worry about messing about with any gunk unless you have heat problems or plan on overclocking the CPU.

Re: How does this look on the gamer scale?

As dai said, age is not a concern. My 15 yr. old Granddaughter helps me with some assemblies and she's getting "almost" as good as me.
