Dummie Needs Advice On New PC Purchase

I need a new 'low cost' computer. I am not a gamer but mostly use computer for internet and sometimes a game or two. My local computer store can build a box which consists of:

Athlon 64 1640 (2.6Ghz) cpu
ASUS AM2+ motherboard
Foxcon case w/300w ps
1 gig PC2-5300
WD 160 gig 7200RPM SATA II
On-board video and PClex slot
Windows XP Home
DVDRW w/nero
Cost: 400.00

Question is, is this rig worth the money?
Would anyone suggest different components?
My 7 year old computer lost it's motherboard and I am now working from a computer I put together from dumpster scraps and it barely gets me on the internet to ask these questions of you knowledgeable people. Thanks for any input because I am really ignorant when it comes to computers and their components.
Thank You,
littlebuddie

Re: Dummie Needs Advice On New PC Purchase

That seems like a fair price for the build and has some room for expansion. Check the PSU in the FoxCon case. They used to use Powerman but the later cases I saw had some cheapy brand.

Re: Dummie Needs Advice On New PC Purchase

Thank yousimpswr and Tyreefor your replies! I cannot work anymore and am disabled so money is very tight for me. I have to save up and do without some things for awhile to get a computer so I am doing my homework now. Actually I am able to build one myself with some guidance on which internals to consider. I just don't fully understand the myriad of descriptions, capabilities and functions of the components. I sincerely appreciate your suggestions and advice!
Thank You,
littlebuddie

Re: Dummie Needs Advice On New PC Purchase

Wow linderman, I can't believe how helpful you are. I am looking at everything that you have linked to and it looks like I can make this work! I appreciate the time you have taken to help and guide me as I am clearly in the dark about a lot pertaining to computers. Isn't it funny how the majority of us take computers for granted - until they break. This is a wonderful forum site and I thank everyone who has lent me a hand, especially linderman. Now I have something to work with and will get busy really doing my honework. Thanks!!

Re: Dummie Needs Advice On New PC Purchase

in all fairness to your "dealer / custom building shop" he is saddled with this need for paying bills :) so whenever you build a rig yourself the cost of labor and overhead is spent inside the machine; therefore his spec will never equal the computing muscle of a DIY build..........I run a small shop myself and I certainly know how the game is played. but I think where most shops go wrong is not trying to identify the hobby builders and fixers with the customers who dont want to learn how to fix and build .......... the "dont want to knows" are where I make my money, the hobby builders I try to help and advise without driving my hand into their pockets

enjoy ............the research and the building are at least half the fun!!
