Network server build

I'm looking to build a network server used primarily for the following:
*NAS/file server
*Media server/streaming and recording
*Web server
*VPN tunneling
Print server
Firewall
Mail server

*The starred items require suitable hardware for them to run in parallel with reasonable speed.

The following is the build I have in mind currently:

HDD
5x1TB 7200 RPM Samsung Spinpoint F1 (RAID 5 array) $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152102
2x80GB 7200 RPM WD Caviar Blue (RAID 1 array) $35.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822135106

Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P $114.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128358

CPU
Intel Pentium E5200 $69.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro $18.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186134

Memory
2x2GB OCZ Flex-EX DDR2 1200 $69.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227405

Video
EVGA 8600 GTS $29.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130394
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116007

PSU
Xclio Stablepower 500W $50.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189014

Case
Coolermaster Cosmsos 1000 $189.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119138

The price comes down to about $1.2k. Also, do you think the PSU is large enough to power everything; I haven't used a calculator to calculate it out.

Re: Network server build

550w-600w will do but you need a better quality supply to run 24/7 then Xclio.

Re: Network server build

Alright thanks for the advice. I knew I was skimping on the PSU, but I wasn't really sure of any good brands for PSUs. Other than that though, do you think the build is good for what I'm using it for.

Re: Network server build

For a server build you could drop the board down to a UD3R to lose the second PCIe x16 slot.

Why the 2 80 gig drives?

Re: Network server build

Well, here's what I was thinking. The 5 1TB drives will be used for media storage, and the 2 80 GB drives will be used for backup of important data (in addition to disk backup). I was going to do a RAID 1 array w/ the 80GB drives for some extra precaution.

Edit: BTW, for a 24/7 server, is it necessary to have "enterprise-class" or "RAID-class" harddrives? It's about $50-$60 more expensive compared to the normal drive, and I don't really know if it's just marketing or actual reliability gains. I was also considering the Ecogreen drives. Do you think, however, there will be a noticeable performance drop, and if so, would you say the reliability benefits outweigh the performance drop?

Re: Network server build

There are reliability gains but if the system is just on and idle most of the day the hard disks are not working in a enterprise environment the disks are write/reading most of the day and backups run in off peak hours.
Another solution would be to back up the 80 Gig to the 5T array as an image once a day or once a week.

Re: Network server build

Alright, I think I'll stick w/ the spinpoint hdd's, but the reason why I wanted to do an additional CD or DVD backup of files is because I'm concerned if the RAID controller fails. In that case, would I still be able to recover data?

Re: Network server build

If the Raid controller fails you'll still have the Single nonraid drive working, with the OS on it to attempt to rebuild the array.
