cpu problem with newly buillt computer

Hi everyone. I built my first computer yesterday and everything went fine and all the hardware works. When I booted it up for the first time I went into BIOS and checked my system temps and everything was good but it said my cpu was running at 53 degrees celsius. Is this how it is right when you boot it up for the first time?

I am running a intel q9550 with an aftermarket cooler master 120 mm cpu cooler. The case is a nzxt tempest with 6 fans.

Is there something I need to do to get it to cool down?

Did you apply thermal paste?

Yes I applied the thermal paste. I put a thin layer on, is that right?

Re: cpu problem with newly buillt computer

That should work, but did you clean off the top of the CPU and bottom of the heatsink with 90+% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free rag first? I don't think it's what's causing your problem, but it is worth doing since it makes the thermal paste work better.

Sometimes temperature sensors aren't accurate, but the BIOS ones are usually the best. I can't imagine why your CPU would be that hot at idle just in BIOS.

I leave this to the more competent techs.

Re: cpu problem with newly buillt computer

I let it run at 55 degrees for about 10 minutes and then I hurried and touched the pipes on the heatsink and it wasn't hot at all. Could my mobo be misreading the temps?

Re: cpu problem with newly buillt computer

It's doubtful the Bios readings are wrong but it's a possibility. What brand and Model is the Mobo?
If the aftermarket CPU cooler (that voids the CPU warranty) uses the snap-lock Intel type fasteners be certain that all four legs are snapped securely into the Mobo.
