Need some Help Picking parts for a cheap but good Gaming comp

Ok I Just have my laptop and its not cutting it anymore graphics wise, I need a desktop. Can you guys help me out?

I like the $800 price one in this post
http://www.techsupportforum.com/2084876-post1.html
but its still a lot :/

also my homes not very big so if its possable too get compact case setup that would help too. now to answer the sticky questions.

1. Budget: How much money are you willing to spend on the new build?
-as low as I can go without sacrificing performance (under $1000 USD if possible)

2. Brands: Are there any brands of components you want or don't want?
-not really as long as they work well

3. Multitasking: Will you be multitasking with this computer and if so, how much?
-I may run a few VMs on it so extra RAM could help

4. Gaming: Will you be gaming and if so, how much and how new are the games?
-Yes i will be gaming heavily graphic if i can

5. Calculations: Will you be doing any intense calculations or media encoding?
-most encoding will probably be FRAPS videos and a few Hammer Maps for HL

6. Overclocking: Do you plan on overclocking and if so, how much?
-naw

7. Storage: How much storage will you need and what will you be storing?
-largest i can for lowest price

8. Legacy Support: Will you need support for older hardware like parallel, serial, or PS/2 devices?
-nope

9. Operating System: Do you want Windows XP or Vista, or Linux compatibility?
-I'll just use my XP disk if I can find it. if not XP > Vista

10. Case: Do you want help selecting a case and if so, how big do you want it?
-most compact form as possible as long as the parts fit

11. Accessories: Do you want a keyboard, mouse, or other items included?
-basic durable keyboard/mouse would help.

12. Recycled Components: Will you be reusing any components you already have?
-only have a laptop so not much I can do

13. Monitor: If you want a monitor, what size do you want and should it be widescreen?
-doesn't need too be that big if possible wall mounting flat screen would be best

14. Stores: Do you have any online stores that you prefer to purchase from?
-I usally shop newegg but if its cheaper elsewhere by all means /o/

15. Location: What country do you live in?
-USA :p

Thanks guys o/

EDIT: forgot too mention this would be my first self build :p

Re: Need some Help Picking parts for a cheap but good Gaming comp

Please help us to help you. You have said you would spend up to $1000 and that you liked the $800 build that linderman suggested a lot. Then, you said it was still a lot. Are we supposed to assume you don't want to spend the $1000 you mentioned earlier or you want to add to that build to bump it up to $1000???? Please clarify, that is a very nice build that linderman has put together.

The $800 build you liked but think it still too much. Drop the Zalman CPU cooler and use Windows 7. That knocks off $135.

Re: Need some Help Picking parts for a cheap but good Gaming comp

The AMD build on that page is decent also if saving a few bucks is a great issue with you at this time. You will give up a little, but not a great deal with the AMD build, then do without the cooler as mentioned to save a few bucks more. (in most instances, the factory cooler on both AMD and Intel will do the job unless you are in to overclocking a lot.
