Re: suggestion please

Sony Optiarc works good for me. Don't get a Lite-On. They're cheap, so it's an appealing trap. These drives break down easily. Bad burns and the disc tray doesn't always open.

Re: suggestion please

Lite-On produces drives for most of the major manufacturers.
I've used and sold over 200 of them in the last few years and have had a minimum failure rate. Lite-On's customer service is not good but when DVDRW's are less than $25 I just replace them at my cost for good customer relations.
I went to LG a few months back for PC's that do large data burns (i.e. movies) because they are excellent writers.
The Optiarcs are rebranded NEC.

Re: suggestion please

Sony's good too. Lite-on... Never heard of it before. And the link to the page above which compares it to LG has 4 stars for Lite-on and just a 1 for LG as a rating! Strange!

Re: suggestion please

Lite-On has been making their own, as well as a lot of other brands, for a long time.
I've used them for many years and I've sold a ton of them. They are reliable and consistent readers and writers.Don't pay too much attention to the ratings on newegg.
My suggestions, as well as the other menbers of the Hardware Team, are based on actual knowledge and use of the products and not on reviews.
If you'll read the Newegg reviews carefully you will not a LOT of the posters list their "Tech Level" as High or somewhat High. Reading their posts, you will soon find that some tend to stretch the reality of their Technical Knowledge.

Re: suggestion please

my only real gripe with the newegg reviews is they are given shortly after buying the product; in essence not really a great testomonial of how great any product is ....... hell if you see a feedback speaking of 6 month ownership its a keeper

but I have found most all DVDRW's are decent enough; and besides, like someone mentioned, at $25.00 each how much sleep are you goign to lose when one does hit the crapper ?

I have had excellent expereinces with all the ones spoken of above, Sony / LG / Lite-on >>>>although noiser than most / optiarc / panasonic / toshiba

I dont hardly shop by manuf at all any more ............ any of them in the $25.00 price range will make you a happy camper

otherwise; break the wallet out and see if Plextor or JVC is still making them ?

Re: suggestion please

Plextor is selling optical drives under their name but I don't think they are making them.
I know the last series wasn't.

Re: suggestion please

hmmmmm not sure myself right now / Plextor was the king of optical drives for years; when the prices got so cheap they struggled financially, and may have got bought out ?

but I dont see a leader in the market just getting left to die on the vine before somebody buys them up ?

Re: suggestion please

The last Plextor made drives, that I am sure of, were the 716 series. I still have one 716 IDE that works. It's burned at least 500 movies to DVD.

and this has gone off topic; how ?
