Help on decreasing desktop noise
I built my desktop just about two years ago (a friend of mine put it together for me) with an Intel E6300, no overclock, integrated graphics, two hard drives. I'm using the stock fan, as long as two 120mm case fans, one in the front, one in the back, both pushing air toward the back of the case. In addition, my case has a 250mm side fan pushing air in. My PSU (Ultra V-Series) has a 120mm fan as well. A week or so ago I completely reorganized my wiring and dropped my CPU core and die temps by ~30 degrees Celsius (70 to 40). Problem is, the noise is starting to get rather annoying. Is there any way I can reduce it?
Here are my temps, as indicated by SpeedFan, on about 10-20% load: CPU die: 42C Motherboard: 39C Motherboard: 33C ICH: 50C MCH: 46C HD0: 27C Core 0:43C Core 1: 41C HD1: 27C Speedfan also indicated a "Chassis outlet" fan speed of ~1700-1900 RPM before my wire reorganization. However, after I noticed that the CPU and rear case fan three-pin wires were in the wrong places and switched them, it now shows 0 RPM. (One case fan came with the case; the other I bought for ~$7 or so.) Here are my computer's complete specs: Desktop Upgrade Advice Needed And while I'm at it, should I replace my CPU thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5? I read something in Intel's motherboard manual that changing the thermal compound is unnecessary and unneeded. Last edited by getmoreatp; 06-18-2009 at 11:33 AM. Reason: Add info |

Re: Help on decreasing desktop noise
If you move the hsf from the cpu you must clean and reapply thermal
paste, be it artic silver, or whatever. Clean both surfaces with alcohol, no fingernail polish remover, just alcohol. If the noise is vibration you may try remounting the fans with some felt in the front, you may be able to remove that fan on the side altogether if your temps are cool enough. If the pc has been ran for a couple of years, or alot of use its a good idea to reapply thermal compound, just read directions. Your temps look ok to me now with it at 20% load..at idle you want to be in the mid to lower 30's...
