Red Faced New build immediate shut down issues

Hi

I have just pieced together a system out of a few different barely used parts. everything seems fine and it boots, but after about 5 to 7mins from boot the system shuts down.

I have moved the ram around, taken out the video card and used the onboard video, reset the bios, twiddled with all the bios settings (fairly randomly)

I have been trying to instal any OS (xp, Linux, Solaris) on the machine but nothing gets installed as it gets about a 1/4 in the process and just turns off.

Here are the specs.
  • ASUS P5K-VM (used)
  • INTEL E6750 (used but only with this mobo and was working fine before)
  • CORSAIR 2x1GB XMS2 6400 (used only with this mobo/cpu)
  • ASUS nVidia 8600GTS 256MB (new)
  • HITACHI Deskstar 120GXP 80 GB ATA-100 Hard Drive (used)
  • LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM EIDE optical drive
  • Antec SL400 PSU(used from another system)
    ANTEC Solo case (new)
  • One large case fan, which is not regulated by the Mobo (connected directly to psu)
Any thoughts? Any direction would be helpful.
Thanks in Advance folks!

Re: New build immediate shut down issues

For one I think your a little shy on the power supply. You need 26amps
on the 12volt rail/s to run the video card. With that old 400watt psu
being used, and not really up to par in the first place, that would be my
first thought.

Try the bench test to eliminate some parts. Don't skip steps and follow everyone exactly. Post your results after.

Re: New build immediate shut down issues

Have you checked the temperatures and voltages in the bios. I would think that would be the logical first step for you. Please post them here when you have them.

BTW, the comments about the power supply being weak might be quite valid. That particular model is not real strong.

I didnt think that our avatars were supposed to be slanderous to the
new administration and or political. If you want to insult someone do it
in the political forum. Just a thought as this part of the forum should be
left un bias.
