Desktop wont stay on

I just built up a new desktop using new and old parts.
New parts are:
ASUS M3N72-D motherboard
520w power supply
N9600GT video card 512mb ddr3
4 gb ddr2 ram
Clear UV case, w/3 fans built in

Old parts are:
Athlon dual core processor 4000+ 2.10ghz
250gb hard drive(cant remember specs)
cd drive
2gb ddr2 ram

after following motherboard assembly instructions i go to power on the cpu and after 5 seconds the cpu with turn off. If i hold the power button down after 20 seconds or so i get one long beep with four short ones.

where do i even begin, i have tried to unplug some fans to see if powersupply was problem, didnt work. i have reseated processor multiple times to no avail.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

What is the brand and model of the PSU?
Did you redo the thermal paste each time you reseated the cpu?
Disconnect all the drives install only 1 stick of ram in the slot closest to the cpu, pull the video card and use the integrated for testing, see if it boots that way.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

PSU is a UT520Q 520w 120MM ball bearing, the psu worked when it was in my other desktop. its a generic one.
Everytime i moved the heatsink, yes i put new paste on the processor.
pulled video card and all sticks of ram but one and disconnected both drives, still a no go.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

Should be a jumper on the motherboard unplug the power move the shunt from pins 1&2 to 2&3 then back it resets the bios to defaults their should be a picture of the jumper and pins in the manual.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

Followed the directions in manual, then did it again as well as removed the lithium battery. No good. Also whenever i push the power button on the cpu, my monitor doesnt turn on. it has an orange standby light on though.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

Do the bench test to eliminate the possibility of a short to the tray.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

so i found that the power switch is causing the problems, if i use a screwdriver and start the computer it works fine, but if i connect the wires, it shuts right back off.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

now the cpu continuously tells me to repair the computer, due to a power failure or recent hardware change, i choose to repair the computer takes a few minutes then says it cannot repair whatever is wrong. where do i go from here. i have put the windows xp disk the drive from startup but am unable to find where to run it.

i also upgraded my PSU to a thermaltake blackwidow 850w, as well as put a heat sink w/fan on my processor.

Re: Desktop wont stay on

Depends on what you want to do, there's the second repair install from the xp disc.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Or there's the "repair with recovery console" option that comes up first when you boot from the xp disc. I've had to run chkdsk /r from the command prompt in the recovery console after a power failure. Not every time, or even most times, but it does happen.
