Built PC can't play games without freezing

I just recently built a PC with the following specs:
Nemesis Elite Case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146030)

Corsair 620 Watt PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139002)

Core 2 Quad Q9550(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115041)

790i ftw motherboard

Seagate 720.10 200 gb 7200 rpm (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262)

G.Skill 2gb DDR3 1066

GTX 260 pci-e 2.0 896mb (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130370)

samsung 22x lightscribe sata (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151173)

I have Windows XP on it with SP3.

The problem is that when I play games such as WoW and CS:S, it freezes right after I get onto a server. Though it does work when doing normal Windows operations such as web browsing. I put a friend's 8500 GT in the case it worked flawlessly. I RMA'd the gtx 260 and just got the new one. Unfortunately, the same problem occurs. I put the latest drivers for my card and I tried using older drives until 180.48 ( using Driver Sweeper in between). I tried disabling the sound in Device Manager and it lasted a bit longer but froze still.

I'm pretty sure it's not the PSU as the system worked fine with my friend's card and I have read of people with the same PSU and GPU and their systems work fine. The GPU worked in my friend's computer but he was getting low fps, probably because his motherboard is only PCI-e profile 1.0 compliant. I believe it is a driver, possibly the sound or something else probably. The BIOS is updated to the latest version available and all Windows Updates have been installed. I will try new motherboard drivers soon and will uninstall the sound drivers once I get the chance to and update the thread.

But can anyone give me anything else to try if the motherboard and sound drivers don't work? I am thinking of selling this card and getting a 9000 series card if nothing works.

try running with one stick of ram ............

I dont think your video is as much the culprit as is the motherboard ........ the nvidia chipsets did not do well with Intel CPU's.......... thats why they abandoned the motherboard chipset world

check the Gskil website memory selector to be sure the sticks you have are approved for your board ? DDR3 has been a buggy adventure thus far!

Re: Built PC can't play games without freezing

I did try with one stick of RAM and no luck either. Both passed Memtest86 testing. I checked the G.Skill site and those RAM sticks are compatible with my motherboard. I'm going to try new motherboard drivers and sound drivers. It can't be my motherboard because the 8500 GT I put in it to test ran flawless. But is there anything else I could check in the meantime?

Re: Built PC can't play games without freezing

download and run sensorsview pro (30 day trial )

watch your cpu temps when you are gaming ............ during an intense scene ...... hit the escape key and then look at sensorsview

report your cpu temps / system temps / aux temps / voltages / hard drive temps

you may have to run a win xp repair install ............ that will remove all old drives but wont touch the data or programs on the system ................ you would need to reload ALL drivers again and windows updates and service pack install

Re: Built PC can't play games without freezing

there is a really good chance your power supply is not up to the task of gaming with your rig .............. a quad with the 260 is alot of juice needed !!

you could check my theory by removing the side cover from the case and blow a house fan into the box while gaming .............. if it lasts any longer than usual ........... then its a power supply weakness from heat
