Crashing computer and debug
This might be a hard one but I guess I'm looking for any ideas anyone might have. I have a Intel d865perl mother board with 3.0 Pentium 4 processor. It start to crash on a regular basics and messed up all the software. I've been doing some debug and here is were I am so far. I've moved around the booting hard drives no solution. Replace the two memory chips (each 1GB) and 98% or better of the problems went away. I even have it down to a single chip that went bad. Now the issue is that once in a while the system will do a complete reboot and come back with the message that windows has recovered from a serious error. It's just like I pulled the plug from the unit and plugged it back in. Other than the mother board or CPU I'm thinking it could be the power supply is getting weak since it's about 3 1/2 to 4 years old. In the time that I've had the machine I would guess the unit has been on for 70-80% of it's life so the power supply has a lot of hours on it. Does this sound like a possible power supply problem?

Crashing computer and debug
Here is what the BIOS is telling me. The system was on for over an hour before I took these readings and was used.
Processor temp 51C or 123F Zone 1 32C 89F Zone 2 39C 100F Fan speed 2700 +1.5V = 1.441 Vccp = 1.305 +3.3 = 3.31 to 3.293 bounces between the two values +5 = 5.131 +12 = 11.875 Any thoughts on this. I have not looked at a ton of these but I don't like the 1.441 or even the 11.875 but I could not say. I will have to note these numbers more often. |

Re: Crashing computer and debug
the 12volt is within spec
the cpu at 51C ideling in the bios is rather hot ................. could be your issue remove the heatsink .............. clean off all old thermal paste and apply new thermal grease ........... you can buy cpu paste at any computer store .............. it must be applied very sparingly ........... like a thin coat of paint............almost see thru

Re: Crashing computer and debug
Comments to the last two posts. If the temp is too high what would a good temp be. I just put a new fan in. It had way more than a thin layer of thermal grease but I could take it out and redo it. It's a all copper Thermal-take (As I remember brand) .
As far as the check disk and defrag. When I rebuilt the machine I started with one hard drive reformatted and reloaded it. After the crashing errors started that messed up the software I then put in a different boot drive and and reloaded that one and the errors returned. At this point I went to the memory and started swapping them. Once it settled down I reformatted the hard disk again. By the way and system check utilities that I could run on the machine all came up empty. I don't have any good stuff but what I did find ran dish and memory checks and all said everything was OK. Thanks for the support so far!! |

Re: Crashing computer and debug
temps should be around 40-45C at idle and 50-55C during heavy work load (multi-tasking)
