New i7 rig
Hello, I've been planning this build for quite a while and finally got all the parts together and freed some time to get it done. The parts I bought are as follows:
Mobo: MSI X58 Eclipse PSU: Corsair TX 850 Watt GPU: Asus GTX295 CPU: Intel i7 965 Case: Thermaltake Armor+ (plus) RAM: Patriot 4GB 1600 HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1tb I'm afraid I failed to notice that Patriot wasn't a supported brand by MSI, I saw that they had done a promotion together before and I assumed that MSI would support their memory, I'll take the hit here. I ordered some OCZ 6gb 1333 RAM which should be here soon. My troubles start after I got all of the components hooked up, I plugged the PSU into my surge protector and turned everything on. It looked like it was working; the LED's on the motherboard were going strong, the power light on the GPU was green, and it didn't give me any beeps to go on. All the of the components were secured and giving me every indication that they were working correctly, but I wasn't getting any image on my monitor (LG 19"). I took a break from building and found that my hard drive had somehow gotten fried during installation and I'd been grounded the entire time, on an anti static carpet, etc. I've been building computers for years now, but they've generally used older components since they've been practice computers. I gave up and went back at it in the morning, and found that the fans on the video card weren't working. I've gotten an RMA for the video card and I plan on sending it back and buying new RAM, I know this has been a lengthy post and I thank you for bearing with me, what I'm hoping you all can tell me is this; Is it likely that it's just the video card and the RAM or is it possible that it's the Motherboard or CPU? Any help is greatly appreciated and once again, thank you for sticking through this post. |

Re: New i7 rig
Does Patriot list the ram as Compatible on their web site?
First thing to check for is a grounding issue on the motherboard try doing the bench test I always assemble and boot them before installing in the case> How to Bench Test Your System |

Re: New i7 rig
Just took it apart and tried to bench test it, still no display or life from the video card fans. Still no beeps from the motherboard although the LED's still come on and all of the fans are active, I noticed that after about 2 minutes everything powers down and resets.
I guess right now I'm just wondering if it would be wise to get an RMA for the CPU and or Motherboard along with the video card. I'm not exactly concerned with the time spent waiting for different parts to make their way there and back, I just want this thing to work. Last edited by Romalus; 03-14-2009 at 04:43 PM. |

Re: New i7 rig
The Motherboard came with an X-fi audigy sound card, I've got the 20+4 pin main power connector connected to the Motherboard as well as the 8pin connector. I've got a 6 and a 6+2 pin connectors connected to the Video card.
CMOS reset, no luck Last edited by Romalus; 03-14-2009 at 04:57 PM. |

Re: New i7 rig
The sound card won't give you the beeps you need a motherboard speaker for that.
