Re: Looking for advice on CPU

you are limited as your MOBO only supports 65nm and up to 1066FSB. I would suggest this then

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017

it is probably the best you can do and it is acually a descent CPU.

Re: Looking for advice on CPU

It does support some of the 45nm cpu's. The E8xxx cpu's are supported, but only the C0 revision. And the problem with that is you may have to go for a used one, if you go that route, as the E0 rev. isn't on the support list, and most will be that by now. It is possible that Asus hasn't updated their list, you could email their support and ask. Here's the cpu support list from Asus.
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...roduct=1&os=17

The question, as always, is why do you need to upgrade? Is it even worthwhile? Depends on the rest of your specs, perhaps posting those would be a good idea.

edit - oops, it's not all the E8xx, the E8600 isn't, but that's not close to your budget.

Re: Looking for advice on CPU

Well, officially they don't support a fsb of 333 but every board can handle it. You might need a bios update to get it work and set the fsb manually.

And then you can get this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115131

Ok, I can confirm now. You can use a Core 2 Quad Q9400 since bios update 2801.
I did the work and went on the Asus support site.

Here is the newest bios update:
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...%20DH%20Deluxe

click on "Bios" and all the bios updates will show up, Bios 2801 is the
newest one.

To confirm that it works here:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx

Scroll down the list:
Till you hit "Core 2 Quad Q9400"

While I did that I saw grimx133 wrote something, and mine
just confirm it.

I hope I could help you out.

Re: Looking for advice on CPU

Problem there is that the quads are a wee bit over budget. Depends on what it's wanted or needed for.

Re: Looking for advice on CPU

check to see if you can use the E8400 or E8500 that would be the cats meow ........... even if you board requires C0 revison of cpu .......... that aint no biggie ...........

they are starting to pop up on ebay used for $100.00

that would leave you enouygh budget for a new video card and maybe even ram too !!

used E8400 = $100.00

8800GTS = $90.00

ddr2-800 ram = $60.00

:)

sell off your old parts on ebay and get some back too !

unless you are into photo shop or auto cad I wouldnt waste the $$$$ on quad core
