Monitors and Power Supplies

Hi,

This is my first time posting on this forum, so I apologize if this is the improper venue.

I just built a new computer and I set up a 2 week maintenance plan. Today was the 2 week marker so I turned off all the peripherals, and unplugged the monitor.

After cleaning the computer, I went about putting my LCD monitor back in place. I plugged in the VGA cord, and then placed the power cord into the monitor.

The issue is, the power cord for the monitor was already plugged into an active power source and when I plugged the cord into the monitor, I heard a distinct crackle.

I powered up the PC and the Monitor and all seems well. But I'm curious - was I suppose to unplug the power cord from its power source first, before plugging it into the monitor? Do you think I caused harm to the monitor, because atm it seems fine.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Re: Monitors and Power Supplies

That may have been a static charge you heard and they can cause harm, but in this case not as likely as some other scenarios.

Let me make a suggestion, get a high quality power strip and in the future plug all your things that need electricity in to that power strip. Then when you shut the power strip off, you shut everything off.

Since it is working fine, I think you are safe to assume that everything is fine. Therefore, if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

O.K., only kidding!
