First Build - Help
I am building a new computer and was just double checking if the parts were compatible with each other and if I need any other components. So far I have:
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Nehlalm 2.66 GHz Mobo: ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution, LGA 1366 socket, 6x 240pin 1333 (1600 o.c.) ddr3 ram triple channel, SATA, 6x PCIe 2.0 (x16) 3x SLi ram: 3x2GB 240pin DDR3 1600 ram GPU: ATI Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 PCIe 2.0 1GB DDR5 VRAM IPS: XCLIO Stable Power 1000 watt Samsung 1TB SATA Hard Drive I already have the accessories I'm wondering how to overclock the ram, CPU, and mobo and how to actually configure the bios and all the parts to actually get it up and running, and do I need any extra cooling or anything? |

Re: First Build - Help
Well with regards to the overclocking and BIOS tuning that I am sure is a subject for the appropriate forum(although its not really my place to make that call) so i'll address the compatibility. The parts are compatible but why go with i7 stuff. It is still in the 1st gen stage. your money will be better spent with the better performing 775 stuff. I7 has alot of promise but isnt there yet and wont be for a while yet. As far as cooling you will need a cpu cooler. Your case will take care of all the other cooling. What type of use are you going to be doing. the antec 900 or 1200 are good choices for air cooling. you shouldnt need to change anything in your bios for the system to work. you may need to change the boot order so you can do the inital install of your O.S but pressing F8 during POST to get to the boot menu and then select CD rom and you can install your O.S. Other than that just think about what I said regarding i7.

Re: First Build - Help
I would pick a better power supply, the ram is an important part of an i7 set up the cpu performs best on the fastest ram you can afford.
Have a read through the PSU sticky there is a link in my signature. |

Re: First Build - Help
The wattage is fine the brand isn't known for quality supplies.
The i7 platform moved the memory controller to the cpu so faster is better now because your no longer limited by the fsb speed/ memory bus speed ratio. |

Re: First Build - Help
Go with a better brand, the following manufacturers make top notch PSUs:
Seasonic Silverstone PC Power & Cooling Corsair Thermaltake (ToughPower series only) Coolermaster (Real Power Pro series only) Go with an 850W or 1000W PSU from one of those brands and you will be fine. |
