My First Build. Help?

Hey guys, thanks for stopping buy and checking out my post Any who here is the deal. I'm building my fist computer, woo me, but what I want to know is mainly about the OS. I'm looking to put in the Windows Vista but I don't know what CD to get, should I get the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade Service Pack 1. Or is that the wrong thing i need for my computer. Its basically a gaming system. So if someone could give me the link to the OS I need or tell me what Vista pack I need I would be very grateful.

Motherboard: Asus M3N78 PRO GeForce 8300 HDMI Hybrid SLI MB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Socket AM2 CPU
Power Supply: Ultra LSP450 450-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready
Ram: OCZ SLI-Ready Dual Channel 8192MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (4x2048MB)
Harddrive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, Serial ATA
Videocard: Sparkle Calibre GeForce 9600 GT OC Green Dual Fly - 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: My First Build. Help?

Upgrade is for a system that already has an OS like XP on it to upgrade from.
Your choices are OEM or Retail the difference being the License terms OEM lives and dies with the motherboard Retail can be installed on any 1 pc and moved if removed from the fist pc to a second or third or fourth as long as it is only on 1 pc at a time.
The you have the choice of 32 bit or 64 bit, 32 bit has a memory limitation of 4gig (will show around 3.2Gig but can address up to 4) 64 bit has a limit of 128gig but has compatibility issues with some older hardware(printers, scanners, add in cards)
Then Vista home or Vista Ultimate.

I think your looking for Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM.

And looking at your specs loose the Ultra PSU they're junk. at least 550w for a 9600gt

For the price of the 9600GT you may be better off with a 9800GT
Where are you shopping?

Re: My First Build. Help?

I agree with wrench97. I also suggest the Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM. His PSU suggestion is a good one. I have an Ultra PSU and love it but it is thier 1000W Modular model and is alot better then thier low end stuff. that corsair is a solid choice. And yest go with the 9800GT as the price is so close to the 9600GT. I know I just repeated what wench said but that should assure you that these are some good recommendations. Enjoy

Re: My First Build. Help?

Okay well I do have a Majority of my parts on tiger direct. But stuff like hard drive and fans im getting from computer geeks. But i should go with a 550? or should i go with something a Lil higher because of the fans and leds and such, I got hard drive fans and ram fans etc. But vista 64bit is the best gaming os out there? Is there that big of a difference between 64 and 32 bit?

Re: My First Build. Help?

As far as gaming goes all 64bit gives you is the ability to have more then 4gig of Ram but it also uses more for system resources.

If your adding fans and lights will need more to power them all.
There is also this one> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703005 Rebate is only good through today though.

Re: My First Build. Help?

yup...i once again agree with all that wrench said. I am a firm believer though that having a bigger PSU than needed is not a bad thing. So if it were me i would go as BIG and high end as i could afford as it would deliver nice clean stable power and at the same time take care of any future upgrades as adding another HDD and GPU tends to be common. although it may not be neccessary.
