[SOLVED] Can I use this PSU while waiting for the new one?

Hi, here is the situation. I recently ordered new computer parts with this PSU.

PC Power & Cooling S75CF 750W EPS12V SLI NVIDIA SLI Certified (Dual 8800 GTX and below) CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817341011

The rest of the parts are as follows.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail 229.49 CAD

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115036

SAPPHIRE 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail 244.09 CAD

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814102810

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail 67.29 CAD

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820231166

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail 139.39

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813128359

Now, what is happening is that for some reason, my PSU is not being shipped from the same place as the other stuff. I will receive everything less the PSU on Dec 30 and the PSU on Jan 6. Now the computer I'm using right now has a 500W PSU that I bought around 2 years ago. I can't say what brand it is, but it was around $80. It doesn't look like a cheap piece of crap because its surface is reflective like a mirror and it has modular wires. It is currently supporting my X1900XT just fine. So, I was wondering if I could use it for a week, the time my real PSU arrives or should I not?

Re: Can I use this PSU while waiting for the new one?

I see, but not the new card huh? What if I can take some burden off the old PSU by having another PSU power the hard drive?

Why take the chance of toasting your new set up?

You can enter your specs here

and see but as Wrench and Linderman say, you are taking a risk and you need to askyourself if being that impatient for a PSU is worth it :)

Re: Can I use this PSU while waiting for the new one?

the trouble is how do you know what your current 500 watt power supply is actually capable of output ????/ more so amps rather than watts !

stickers on PSU's mean nothing ............ unless the company placing the sticker has a reputation worth a hoot ............

then there is the consideration of capicator aging ....... each year a power supply is used it loses from 10-15% (more on an overclocked system) of its original capability ?

kind of like an old man cant run as fast as he could when he was young LOL

Who can't?? Who you talking about?? "Not me, said I." Speak for yourself linderman

On using the old power supply until the new ones arrives. I need to chime in with an old saying, "Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread." Don't pay for this thing twice by having to replace other items. Just wait or use the old card.

Re: Can I use this PSU while waiting for the new one?

Or me, I'm sure a lot slower than when I was a young lad, of course the benefit is that with getting old(er) I can't remember how it felt to be young, so it's kind of a wash eh.

Anyway, you're much better waiting, sucks, but much better safe than sorry. Hate it when newegg.ca ships from California, I get the New Jersey stuff in 3 or 4 days, took 2 weeks for an hsf earlier this month.
