Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
My son wants a gaming PC for his birthday. He gave me a list of games he's interested in playing right now (he's 15). I was initially going for a $500 build, but I want him to be able to play this for a while before upgrading much, but the closer I can get to that number the better.
Games he is interested in: World of Warcraft Unreal Tournament 3 Battlefield 1942: Complete Collection Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Shadow Ops: Red Mercury My component list so far: Galaxy 98TFF6HUUEXX GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814162028 $89.99 AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.1GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103272 $69.99 ASUS M3A78 Pro AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131325 $99.99 COOLER MASTER Real Power Pro RS-650-ACAA-A1 650W ATX Form Factor 12V V2.3 / SSI Standard EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171023 $79.99 Western Digital Caviar GP WD5000AACS 500GB 5400 to 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136149 $59.99 LITE-ON Black DVD Burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106228 $19.99 G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231112 $38.99 Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021 $109.99 Windows Vista 64 Home Premium http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488 $99.99 Total: $668.91 Any critiques of this system? Anywhere that I can cut the cost a bit? Anything I'm missing? (I picked the Nine Hundred case for the time being as an upper amount that I'd want to spend, it seems like every case has a fair amount of complaints about it. He'd like a modern looking one with a clear side w/LED's for effect.) |

Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
Video card I would change. I have never heard of a company Galaxy, at all.And buying a video card from an unknown company may not be as good as one may think. Would rather get from nVidia or ATI, which have proven their value. I would get a:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130397 Processor, I do not like AMD. Their processors will never mach up to Intels. But for the price, it will do. Motherboard, I would stick with this one, if you will stay with AMD. PSU (power supply), have no complaint. Very good. HDD (hard drive), good especially for the price. CD/DVD Rom, have no complaints over. RAM company never heard, but for the price, pretty good. OS, hell, better than vista home basic. And i did not get any problems with it. But I mostly used it for games. Need to know your budget for the PC and I may, with help, be able to suggest some components.

I think your making a mistake using AMD, The top dog at the moment is Intel's C2D and that should last him longer into the future.
Have a look at these charts before you set this build in stone so to speak I do have some builds very close to your current price that will out perform it by a wide margin. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/d...x1050,819.html |

Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
I used the AMD 5000+. I got a Intel Q6600 a few weeks ago, and even at 3.4GHz i see no difference between the two - Even though the Q6600 IS much faster, unless you're into benchmarking you really cant beat AMD for the $$

Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
I'm completely new to this, so I'm not really familiar with brands/performance/etc. Thus not knowing that Galaxy is an unknown.
![]() I'm used to my $395 laptops doing everything I need since I don't game! I mostly pieced the above together by looking up recommended builds online for the price point (< $700) and looking for similarly rated items. I'll replace the video card with the one recommended for now and see how this takes me... wrench97, do you have any spec lists for the builds you spoke of? I am completely out of water when it comes to matching motherboards/processors/etc. and putting together performance specs. I should add that at the current time we have no computers that will run these games in our house, so even if it doesn't run Crysis in super-duper ultra-high resolution, it would be leaps and bounds ahead of where we are right now. Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
This has a video card made by EVGA who's support you can beat as far as I'm concerned.
It's a little over $700 after MIR you can shave another $15-20 by using a E8400 instead of the E8500. The Case has no side window but comes with case fans and Blue lights on the front. Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
Thanks for the help...
I've created a public NewEgg wishlist, I have taken your advice and tweaked it a bit to save a few $ (DVD, HD, and the slightly smaller processor). http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=14138467 |

Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
Well, since I don't already have a monitor, that hurts...
I just noticed that the Acer doesn't have DVI inputs... guess I'll have to keep looking. (ETA: Found one, didn't take long!) I quickly realized that a $500 wouldn't last him very long, it's like paying 80% of ticket price to watch the last 5 minutes of a football game. Last edited by mditt8671; 12-29-2008 at 11:40 AM. |

Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
The price won't be too bad... everything except for the CPU is cheapest at NewEgg. The CPU is cheaper at TigerDirect, even with shipping. I am going to use my Ebates account to get 2% off the NewEgg order and 3% off the TigerDirect order, and with all rebates, my total cost will be $809.98.
Not bad for a game system with monitor, I think? |

Re: Building a gaming PC for my son - help?
A lot of difference the dual slot is a good thing as it exhausts the hot air from the card out the back of the pc you will lose a pciex1 slot that normally won't be used.
