Linux and WinXP Project

Hello! I was searching through google researching different computer parts when I found your site, and I noticed a lot of people being helpful so I decided to join. I was wondering if any of you guys could help me with a project I'm going to be doing.

My goal is to build a computer that preforms nicely both in Linux Ubuntu Beryl and Windows XP. I looked at your 'read this first' thread and I am using this form to make it as easy as possible on any helpers.

1. Budget: YAY BIRTHDAY AND CHRISTMAS MONEY + SAVINGS ACCOUNT.
I need to buy:
CPU (found a good one for 50$)
MOTHERBOARD (ability to connect to a wireless network and around 4 USB slots)
PSU (although one FAQ I read said this sometimes comes with the case, but that could be BS for all I know.)
RAM (as long as it works with everything else)
CASE
VIDEO CARD (leaning toward the brand NVIDIA)
OPTICAL DRIVE (read and write CDs and DVDs, although I don't think they sell optical drives without this anymore, do they?)
HARD DISK (I want to go cheap here... I don't need much storage)
( I hope I'm not forgetting anything, please tell me if I am)

With around 400$. (this may be impossible to do, if it is, disregard that) Also, the case and Hard disk upgrades are technically optional since I already have those.

2. Brands: I already picked out a processor, unless there is something that REALLY changes my mind I'm sticking with this because it's cheap and two times better than my old one. Yes, my old computer sucks. =]

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...nnorswebguidec

3. Multitasking: I will be multitasking, but a moderate amount.

4. Gaming: What I really want to be able to play on the windows is NeverWinter Nights Diamond edition... an old game, but good. I'm more of an 'oldie' gamer so I don't need a video card on steroids.

5. Calculations: Uhhh... I will be doing some C++ coding but I can do that fine on the computer I have now. Most likely I don't understand this category and so it isn't that relevant.

6. Overclocking: Nope!

7. Storage: I am just fine with the 37 GBs of my old computer, I can assure you anything they make now will be just fine. Cheaper the better.

8. Legacy Support: I am not sure. Possibly for my sound card I'm recycling, which is SB live something

9. Operating System: A dual boot with Linux Ubuntu Beryl and Windows XP

10. Case: I'd like to look for the case myself, but suggestions are welcome! ATX.

11. Accessories:/12. Recycled Components:/13. Monitor: I plan to recycle the monitor, mouse, keyboard, and sound card.

14. Stores: I don't care, prefer online because it's easy. 15. Location: USA

Thanks for your help!

The Black edition CPU does not come with a heat sink and Fan so I included a X2 5200 that does. Have a look over the list there is not a lot of upgrading room here but everythig will work nicely together.

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

Hey Linux Ubuntu Beryl is pretty cool isnt, you also might want to give Kubuntu a try and install "compiz fusion", it has some really neat effects, and in my opinion Kubuntu looks better than Ubuntu.

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

Me and a friend where searching on the Internet, and we found a cheaper CPU that is practically the same except it's 1Mb instead of 512Kb.

Will it still work with the stuff you picked out?

I thought they were exactly the same until my friend pointed out that the 1mb one has 1mb.

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

Alright I get where you are coming from.

I think what most likely happened is they added the dualcore 512kb together as 1mb, even though that's not the case.

That's what I'm thinking but it may be worth asking them.

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

NewEgg says they either ran out of the motherboard or it got discontinued. Can you suggest anything similar that works with everything here?

Edit:
Wait, I think I found it on Amazon, can you make sure it's the same?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...nnorswebguidec

Thanks. =]

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

That is the same board but it is a "used like new" condition I would pass on it.

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

Thank you so much for the speedy reply. Yeah this is really great. Are you sure it fits with everything else? ( xD motherboards are the most confusing to me)

Re: Linux and WinXP Project

Yes it almost the same chipset and the CPU, and Ram are supported, The video card is Nvidia on a Nvidia chipset so no problem there.
