Upgrade Advice Required

Hey Guys i was pointed in the direction of this site by a friend who ensures me you will be the best source of advice in regards to a couple of questions i have.
I have just been given a Packard Bell machine and although it is sufficiently fast at the moment i would like to improve it the best i can whilst i have some spare money kicking around. I have already doubled the RAM to 2Gb with a minor improvement in speed as a result but what is the next logical step??
Below are my specs courtesy of PC Wizard 2008
Mainboard : NEC COMPUTERS INTERNATIONAL P5S800-VM

Chipset : SiS 661FX/GX

Processor : Intel Pentium 4 519J @ 3066 MHz

Physical Memory : 2048 MB (2 x 1024 DDR-SDRAM )

Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200LE

Hard Disk : ST3200826A (200 GB)

Hard Disk : WD External (1000 GB)

DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162L USB Device

DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202J ATA Device

Monitor Type : LG Electronics M1917TM - 19 inches

Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RT8139 (A/B/C/810x/813x/C+) Fast Ethernet Adapter

Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional 6.01.6956

DirectX : Version 10.00

Does anyone know what processor speed my board will be able to handle without causing problems? Also if i upgrade the graphics card what would be a suitable choice for minor gaming and heavy multimedia usage. (With this is mind will i need to upgrade the PSU)

Thanks in advance guys as i know this is a lot to ask for a first post but i will hopefully be able to give something back at sometime.

Re: Upgrade Advice Required

Hello .......................... I will help YOU and then you can help ME .......... ROFL

you first of course !!!!!!

here is your motherboard
http://www.superwarehouse.com/Asus_P...0-VM/ps/464501

your board and chipset was released right at the time of switch over from socket 478 to socket 775

socket 775 very shortly there after was all about DDR2 memory and PCI express video cards

buts your board is right at the cusp......... you have socket 775 cpu that supports only P4 cpu's and Celeron D's .......... unfortunately not the more powerful Pentium D ....... unless maybeeeeeeeeeee you could dig up some bios upgrades that would allow use of the pentium D ....... that would be a worth while upgrade move......

your board only supports AGP video X 8 which is going to really limit you ........ although ATI had some cards which can still game somewhat today ...... I will check into this

all in all you must be very careful .......unless you can get a bios that will allow you to use the Pentium D cpu and a better ATI AGP video card I would say dont spend any money on this rig as there will be no BANG FOR THE BUCK .....RETURN

I will check on bios updates for you and AGP cards ??????????????????/

now the for me part .............. LOL

where did you get this:

Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional 6.01.6956

Re: Upgrade Advice Required

Hey guys thanks for all the help i apologise for the huge cap from post to reply its been a busy couple of months. I think i am going to go with an upgraded graphics card and then in a view months invest in a new machine built from scratch. That way i can tailor it more to my work.

Re: Upgrade Advice Required

Out of interest if i upgrade the card i am looking for something with the same setup as the one i have (Geforce 5200 LE) but with inproved spec. The TV in (its a coaxial cable in) option is essential as i use the computer for everything particualrly TV saying this then, will the 512Mb GeForce 6200 AGP TV DVI be suitable??

Addressing the post from earlier, i got the copy of windows 7 from a developer friend of mine who was having some problems with it and wanted to do some testing on a different machine so he installed it on mine to see if the same problems occured. Having said this i now believe that the Beta version of Windows 7 is available for testing how you would go about getting a copy is another question but i am sure it has been spread across the world for evaluation.
