my newly built PC doesn't work

Hey guys, I finished building my PC today and all the fans and lights work, so I assume everything recieves power properly. However when I boot my PC, my monitor doesn't get any signal. I double checked all the connections, and the only weird thing I noticed is a red light from my GPU (sapphire 4870).

what could be causing this problem?

ok I just found out the red light on the GPU doesn't mean anything's wrong. my cpu cooler is a bit loose, could it cause a problem?

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

It could be sounds like maybe an Intel build?????
Check the heat sink is tight to the motherboard on all 4 legs
What are you building post the Brands and Models of the MB,CPU PSU and Video Card if you're not using integrated.

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

Is the cpu cooler on tight?
Both 6 pin power feeds to the video card?
24 pin and 4/8pin cpu power to the motherboard?
Do you have any other PCIe video card to try?

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

yep all the connectors are well connected, i did connect both 6pin cables to the graphics card. I don't have any other cards I can test it with, my other computer has an integrated card.

the cooler isn't put in very tight, it's a bit loose. i tried to connect it better but i couldn't do it. if my cpu doesnt make any sound at all when i start up my pc (talking about the processor itself, not cooler), does it mean it doesn't work?

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

If the cooler is not on very tight, you need to take care of that issue and then test it before we get too far. The symptoms suggest it might be that issue.

I don't know what I can do about it. I tried all kinds of ways and I can't get more than 3 sides to be tight at the same time. there's always one that's gonna be loose

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

That is one too many they are hard to get on I usually do them before putting the motherboard in the case if your having difficulty I suggest you remove the motherboard so you can see the back side and make sure all 4 are locked in then while you have the board out follow these instructions > How to Bench Test Your System

I recently built....an almost identical rig...exact same Main board...exact same CPU with stock cooler.

And the cooler is very tight...Not all that easy to install.

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

I have always had difficulty getting those darn snap in clamps in. In fact, my personal computer has that cpu with those snaps and this was one of the worst I had done. Not too long ago, I saw this alternate instructions on the forum by Manic, a member of our hardware team. I HAVE NOT tried this one, but might be worth a try:

Warning - be careful, don't push hard enough to break something, so try at your own risk.

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

Damn ... I just made sure it was tight and it still didn't work. What am I supposed to see on the screen when I boot my PC for the first time? Cause if it's only meant to show ssomething when i insert the windows vista disc, it's possible that my pc works but there's a problem with the dvd reader.

Re: my newly built PC doesn't work

I am a little concerned about your power supply's ability to pull the video card. When I researched a couple of reviews, here is one that was troubling:

My concern is that if any video card needs stability on the +12 rail, the ATI 4870 card does. This card is so power hungry and then without stability, that is another red flag to me. I will do some other looking, but that is my main concern at this time.
