[SOLVED] First time building - need some help
Hello, I posted this on another forum, but I thought I'd get some more input on this, just to be safe.
I’m new to building PCs, and want to put together a gaming rig, but am not sure whether these parts are compatible. I don’t need any peripherals. I might purchase parts from www.anitec.ca or www.ncix.com instead of www.newegg.ca, as I live in Canada. Any feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Re: First time building - need some help
I'm a huge AMD fan but they're really not at the top of their game right now, I'd recommend if you can to go with a core2 quad instead.
Also, could you copy/paste the name of the parts aswell as the links? Going on each link makes it a little harder to help you. What exactly do you want the pc for though? (what are you going to be doing with it) Last edited by Ghosted; 11-12-2008 at 01:13 AM. |

Ah, sorry about that. I thought I could get away with being a little lazy

Plus, they seem to cost a little more than the one I had in mind. Is it worth it? Err, I would like to play games at higher resolutions without lag. My current computer hasn't had a hardware upgrade in over 5 years, so I figured getting a new computer is better than upgrading. Edit: I had to put the names of each item here because I can't edit my first post Last edited by knottin; 11-12-2008 at 02:03 AM. |

Re: First time building - need some help
You might want to consider going with the Intel processors at this time. They beat the "socks" off the AMD offerings in speed and all around performance. Slightly more pricey, but worth the difference in price. Take a look at THIS before you make the move.
Also, skip the Antec Trio (quality has not been good recently) and go for this Corsair: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 Better PSU. plus more wattage (which you need with that video card), and at a lower price.

Do I really need quad cores? The Core 2 Duo has a better FPS score from that site than the Core 2 Quad, AND seems to be cheaper. Also, are Intel processors compatible with ATI video cards? Sorry if I am asking dumb questions, but I am new to this and want to be sure before I make my purchase ![]() Thank you for the PSU suggestion

Re: First time building - need some help
NO SUCH THING AS DUMB QUESTIONS; especially when you are about to spend hard earned money!!
yes intel cpu's are compatible with ATI cards ............... I am running the E8400 and ATI 4850 right now and like them alot I would take the E8400 over the Q6600; in fact I have already sold 4 E8400's to builders that had Q6600's and I assisted them in selling off the Q6600's

Re: First time building - need some help
Worth a note: Left4dead and i presume all future source engine based games feature quad core support.
I'm willing to bet the q6600 will win on games such as. Either way, personal recommendation is to make sure your psu and mobo are up to the task of a faster processor so that if you see a bargin in the future or feel the need for a change the option won't cost you too much, just my 2 cents. |

http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/...px?i=2868&p=10
everywhere you read an article with programmers included they repeat how difficult and expensive it is to throw away all the single threaded code and start from scratch ....... given the current economic climate IMHO it will only slow the delivery of true multi core games for some time to come ....... when programmers can bloat the payroll again regardless ............. right now and the next 2 years aim your $$$$$ at those needs with best performance ...... and it will be dual core ....... when the software really gets here ....... thats the time to spend on quads

Re: First time building - need some help
The Q6600's time has come and gone to buy one now does not make sense, If Source Engine's SDK does in fact work correctly (I believe they are saying multithreaded which usually means 2 cores) then anyone building today needs to be looking at a faster FSB on the Q9xxx not the older 6xxx's and don't forget the i7 core intro next week any new development will be focused to optimize the new tech. If you look at programs all ready quad core optimized like Premiere Pro video encoder the Q6600 is the slowest of the Intel quad's currently in production just beating a Phenom. So for a new rig today E8500 or Q9550 if your gaming, Q8200 or up if you into video encoding.

Re: First time building - need some help
That is a very good board.
I have that CPU on a ASUS P5K e wi/fi board and it is also excellent. The ASUS P5Q deluxe series (you need to look at options on all these series boards to choose what is the best for you) is also a very board.

Let us know when you get it up and running. BTW, which motherboard did you decide on? Have a great weekend.

Re: First time building - need some help
I just ordered the parts yesterday, so it might take a while before I can start the assembly. I went with the gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P because I found it on sale at anitec

Re: First time building - need some help
Just a word to the wise, when dealing with an e8400 or e8500, you might want to be careful what you bet on.
