Problem with installing vista on new comp

So I'm building my first computer:

VGA ZOTAC ZT-88TEY2P-FSP 8800GT RT
CPU AMD|A64 X2 4800+ 2.5G AM2 65N R
MB GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3 770 AM2+ R
PSU OCZ|OCZ600SXS 600W RT
MEM 2Gx2|CORS TWIN2X4096-6400C5 R
and my old hard drive

I had a friend come over and help me put it together and it's all good. So then I toss in Windows Vista and install it and **** and my computers up and running. I'm using it for a couple hours then walk away to watch the football game. I come back and find it turned off. I turn it back on and it brings me to the startup screen I had before I installed vista the first time. So I'm like *** w/e I'll just reinstall. But when I get to the part "Where do you want to install Windows?" the box thing is blank. There is no drive there for me to choose from like their was the first time. Idk what happened I didn't touch/break anything and there was no one else in the house it was just shut off when I came back and this was happening. Sorry for the essay but I wanna make sure you know exactly what's going on. I'm not all that great with computers yet so if you could dumb things down a bit it'd be much appreciated :) Thanks in advance.
