Ok,
I've wated to build my own computer with a while (primarily for gaming but overall just to improve performance) So far I've come up with this. CPU: Q6600 Mobo: EVGA nForce 780i SLI Case: Antec 900 Graphics card: XFX 9800 GTX+ (& with its price comes the potential for 2 more) oh and a: Microsoft HABU Gaming Mouse ![]() Im goin to reuse my old hard drive (Samsung SP2504c (250GB, 7200rpm)) and reuse my keyboard aswell as my monitor, 19" (will probably reconsider that though )as far as OS goes ive convinced myself to get Vista ultimate 64 bit and a hefty amount of RAM to complement it ![]() and i havent decided on a power supply yet. So what does the internets infinite knowledge have to say about this spec? ![]() any great value for money doo daa's im missing out on! or incompatibilitiyness i've overlooked?! ![]() ![]() suggestion for power supply? (when i would actually end up with 3 graphics cards is uncertain so, get a big lump o wattage now or later or )all your replies are appreciated! |

Re: Advice for my new Build.
You should get the antec 1200 if your heart is set on that type of
case. It will get real cramped in there, especially with two vid cards. For power, I would be looking at something around 1000watts. The last build I did was almost exactly what you are planning. I think we used a thermaltake 1200watt psu., cant remember. But I do know he used the antec 900, not enough room, very cramped, and it go very hot with the power supply heating up the video cards. Power supply directly underneath the cards. With a 1200 you should have ample room, but you still have the psu on the bottom with heat rising....

Re: Advice for my new Build.
Is there no way around the heat issues? fan settings? extra fans.
i had my heart set on the 900, its cheaper than the 1200 and is a damn sexy case

Re: Advice for my new Build.
That case comes with alot of fans, looks real cool, but when you
cram 2 vid cards in there with all the cables coming out of the psu it is a tangled mess. I was able to hide about everything, very compact, but still hot. The psu is about 3 inches away from the bottom of the bottom vid card. You need the 1200, if you like that style of case. I just dont like the psu being on the bottom. Doesnt make sense, we all know heat rises.

Re: Advice for my new Build.
You will like the 9800's but they do get hot. They all get hot,,lol
As far as optical drives , I usually use sony, not real picky bout those drives, as long as they work. But if I buy one, I look for a sony, had good luck with them over the years. ps. I will tell you this, for the type of build you are doing you cant go wrong with the thermaltake armor, not the small one the big one. I think its a 6000, that was one sweet case, biggest case Ive ever worked on. It was sweet. Plenty of room...Was a pleasure to work on and in.....

Re: Advice for my new Build.
Thanks for the advice.
im now focusing on the power supply aspect. would i be looking at 1000 watt? 3 GTX+ = around 700 maybe 750. ive nothing particualry interesting so 250 watt would be enough to cover everything else right? |

Re: Advice for my new Build.
You will need around 1000watt. Especially if you plan on 3 in sli.
You will also have to pay attention to how many pci-e leads you get with the psu. You cant plug just any connector to your video cards, they have to be pci-e. Be it 6 pin or 8 pin. Those cards require 2 6pin pci-e connectors per card. The new cards ie, any of the dual gpu cards require a 8pin, and a 6pin per card, all pci-e. The adapters dont work most of the time, but keep in mind, even if you use a converter, it has to be on the pci-e line. Ive been there done that. You have to pay attention to this. Or else you will be on hold when your system will not post, and you get to wait on a real power supply that will power your system...

Re: Advice for my new Build.
thanks. so if im lookin for a future proof PSU then it should have at least 6, 6 pin PCI express connectors.
since youve been there, done that, can you give me a brand name maybe to go buy while browsing for Power supplies? also im in ireland and am limited to 3 decent online reatilers (aswell as ebay) and they all dont have the very best stock. so the more mainstream and well known the product the higher the chance of it being available to me... all this help -> mucha appreciated btw. |

Re: Advice for my new Build.
To be honest I cant remember the psu I used on the last high end
build I did. Customer provided all parts. But I do remember it was a 1250watt. I think it was a thermaltake. Maybe someone else will chime in, with a good solution. You also have to keep in mind the 8pin connectors. The 9800gx2 requires a six pin and eight pin. So do the nvidia 280's, and the 260's. So that looks like the way the wind is blowing as far as power. I just dont want you buying something that is not future proof, and lacking.....Research man! lol These connectors have to be pci-e!!!

That's going to take a big bite from the wallet> http://www.pcpower.com/power-supply/...cool-1200.html
http://www.coolermaster.com/products...detail&id=3143 I don't really like the rest on the list except the Corsair 1000hx and I think you would be pushing it too hard. http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html |
