Re: budget rig amd or intel? need help!
if you were going with Intel get this processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115036 By the time applications start using quad cores their will be better quads out their. Most of the newest games use dual cores and the wolfdale core on this processor is extremly good. I just ordered parts and that was the CPU I used for mine :P :)
Edit; Two other things I see a problem with.... Your motherboard isnt a very good brand in my oppinion I would go with a gigabyte or asus board you can normally find cheaper models of asus and gigabyte boards all the time. Also I didn't take much time to look but I don't personally believe in using anything under 600watts for a psu Last edited by joshvette001; 09-22-2008 at 10:14 PM. |

Re: budget rig amd or intel? need help!
I second the dual core option and stick with Intel. Go with an Asus P5k Pro (or maybe the P5Q Pro since it is $119 after rebate) and drop down to the E7200 Wolfdale (you can easily overclock to 3 GHz and beyond) and pair that with the Asus 4850, 4870 if you can squeeze it in. COD4 will fly on that machine.
Drop down to 2 Gig on the memory unless you were planning on going 64 bit. Windows 32 bit won't recognize memory above 3 Gig. Use the extra money to bump up your psu. Take a look at the guide here. Any of those will handle Oc'ing, along with the graphics card, if you decide to go that route. Pauldo Last edited by Pauldo; 09-22-2008 at 11:40 PM. |

Re: budget rig amd or intel? need help!
Sure, 3ghz on air with an E7200 is no biggie, though it might get a tad warm on the stock HSF. An aftermarket cpu heatsink is needed for all but the most casual overclocking. Haven't been doing much of it lately, been running folding at home, so my cpu is always between 50 and 100 percent.
cpu usage 50%, stock speed, haven't rebooted or turned off FAH for about 5 days, and the cpu is at 30C. It'd be a lot hotter if I had the stock heatsink that intel provides on it. |

Re: budget rig amd or intel? need help!
The Asus Radeon 4850 is still $140 after rebate and will beat the 9800 GTX most of the time (COD4 highest settings by more than 10%). Beats the 9800 GTX+ on some games, although you might not notice it.
Great list wrench97. That motherboard looks like it should do the trick on this budget. Yeah, overclocking on air is no problem with those Intel chips. It does help tremendously to have an after market HSF but if you look at the reviews on Newegg you will see guys talking about doing it on the stock HSF. Going to 3 Ghz on the E7200 shouldn't be too bad but worse case scenario is you drop back down until you can get a new, and better, HSF. Pauldo |

Re: budget rig amd or intel? need help!
Read an interesting article yesterday, on the 4850. A review of 3 newer models at extreme tech. A bit pricier, but faster and cooler than the reference design.

Re: budget rig amd or intel? need help!
You're most welcome. Looks like a decent jump in performance since they originally came out. Thinking of picking one up myself, but I'll probably have to wait till after christmas. Who knows what'll fit the price/performance budget by then.
I use Google Reader for RSS feeds and one of the ones I get is extreme tech, check it once a day or so, and even though there's a lot of repetition, do get some useful news and reviews and such. Gearlog has a great feed too, some real odd and interesting stuff shown. |
