First time build (please post oppionion on build)

Trying to build a inexpensive gaming computer, that I can upgrade later on. This is my first time building from scratch, I have upgraded computers many times in past. Any advice on building a computer would be great.

Motherboard: XFX GeForce 8200 Motherboard - NVIDIA GeForce 8200, Socket AM2 / AM2+, MicroATX, Audio, Video, DVI, HDMI, PCI Express 2.0, Hyrbid SLI, USB 2.0, eSATA, RAID, CMOS, LED Display
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?Sku=P450-9120
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition Processor ADO5000DSWOF - 2.60GHz, 1MB Cache, 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) FSB, Brisbane, Dual-Core, Retail, Socket AM2 (940), Processor - No Fan
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...=CP1-AM2-5000B
RAM: Crucial 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory and
Crucial 1024MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...p?Sku=C19-4232
HardDrive: Maxtor DiamondMax 21 500GB Hard Drive - 7200, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...&Sku=TSD-500M4
Graphics Card: Geforce 7950 GT OC 256MB
Heatsink and Fan: Thermaltake TR2-R1 / AMD Socket AM2/939/754 / Aluminum / 92mm Fan / CPU Cooler
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...&Sku=T925-1168
PSU: Ultra LS600 Lifetime Series 600W Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, PCI-Express
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?Sku=ULT-LS600
DVD Drive: 4 year old LG DVD writer I have lying around

I also have a XFX GeForce 8500 GT Ultra Silent Cooling Video Card - 512MB DDR2, SLI Ready, PCI Express 1.0 x16, (Dual Link) DVI, VGA, HDTV
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...?Sku=P450-8666

I have seen online that the 7950 GT is the better card but that is comparing the two cards on there own. with the 8500 GT and my motherboard I can use hybrid SLI, so would it be better to use the geforce 8500 with my build or keep using my 7950 GT. Any input on wheather this is a decent build or not would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: First time build (please post oppionion on build)

Please don't choose an Ultra power supply = Poor quality and weak. I think you would regret doing that.

Look for one of these:

Seasonic – Any Model
Corsair – Any Model
PC Power & Cooling – Any Model
Thermaltake – “Toughpower” Series Only
Coolermaster – “Real Power Pro” Series Only
Silverstone – Any Model

BTW, I have an 8500 GT video card in my spare computer and really like it. Not a bad card at all, although not up to the gaming prowess of the newer and more powerful cards.

Addendum: If you plan on updating your video card later on to something more powerful, then you need to think about at least (bare minimum) a
650+ watt power supply instead of a 600. Just a little tip for the wise if you want to use your money wisely. Having to do this again when you upgrade (as you stated you would) becomes more expensive in the long run...much more so.

Re: First time build (please post oppionion on build)

Most of these components come as a barebones package deal for $309.99 including that PSU. So I could upgrade the PSU at a later time if I need too.

Another question I had was, I will be using the 500GB sata hard drive that I have in my current system, was wondering if i could simply plug my sata drive into my new build without reinstalling windows. Is there any problems that may occur with doing this, or is it a must that I have to reinstall windows.

Re: First time build (please post oppionion on build)

You can not just plug it in if it is a different motherboard. You would have to do a Repair install and reinstall some drivers and sp2. Here is some important information for that process:

Here are Repair Install instructions:

Ya I guess the best way would be to just copy over all my stuff to my spare drive and the reinstall windows. Was hoping I could save some time but I guess not.

Yes that's what you have.
By repair install tumbleweeds means this> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XP...install.htm#RI

It is not a complete format and reinstall it will not overwrite your existing programs.
