Need advice on a new build
I need some advice... I've planned out the new system for the most part, I just wanted to know if the parts seem good.
CPU: Athlon 64 X2 6000+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103773 Motherboard: Biostar Tforce TA780G M2+ AM2+/AM2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813138105R Memory: G-Skill DDR2-800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098 My basic plan is this: I am currently running a Biostar Tforce4 sli amd, athlon 64 3500+, geforce 7900gs, 1GB DDR-400 memory. I want to use the case I already have, pull out and sell the motherboard, proc and memory and 120GB ATA drive. I'll reuse the video card and put in an sata drive b/c the new mobo only supports two ide devices(which will be the dvd-rw and the other 200GB IDE drive). If this works out well, I plan to upgrade to an 8 or 9 series geforce next month. I also made sure to get a board that supports am2+ so that I could maybe put in a phenom when they come down in price. Is this a good idea, or is it totally crazy? I'm a fairly big gamer, so I want to be able to run games at fairly high settings. I also got windows vista business free from my school, so I want to be able to run that with aero, 3d effects, etc. Thanks in advance. Last edited by keaton85; 08-16-2008 at 08:26 PM. |

Re: Need advice on a new build
Well if you don't plan on updating your computer in the future, then i would say that the parts u got there is enough for today's gaming anyway. But if you are planning to upgrade in the future, i would recommend to get a socket 775 and an Intel CPU. Because AMD is behind Intel in development.

Re: Need advice on a new build
Look at the AMD x2 5400+ BE instead - unlocked multiplier, cheaper and you can match the clock of that 6000+. The main difference between this two is the L2 cache...the 6000+ has x2 1MB vs x2 512kb of the 5400+ - not to be too concerned about unless you do heavy database work or other cache 'needy' task.
And the 6000+ is manufactured on 90nm waffers vs 65nm of the 5400+. I would choose the 5400+ and save some money ... pushing it to match the 6000+ on air should be no problem. Edit: I forgot that you need to buy your own cooler for the AMD BEs. So you may not be saving money but the 65nm processor should run cooler, I believe.
